Subject: Jupiter & Venus the only starlike objects to be seen during totality

excerpt from shadow & substance: Viewing the April 8, 2024, solar eclipse from an open field. The Sun and the Moon will be in the constellation of Pisces. Jupiter will be to the upper left of the Sun, while Venus will be to the lower right on that day. The stars surrounding the eclipse are second magnitude in brightness or less, making it impossible (in my opinion) to see any stars because of the brightness of the corona. The two planets will be the only starlike objects to be seen near the eclipse during the three or four minutes of darkness. There is a lot to take in during that time frame! By the time you feel like looking around the rest of the sky, the show is over! |

oops....hit post too soon... IMAGE CAPTION: During the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the sky will darken enough that you should be able to see Venus and Jupiter. Comet Pons-Brooks will be close to Jupiter Image via Stellarium/ Kelly Kizer Whitt. EXCERPT: Word on the street late in the day on April 3, 2024, was that Comet Pons-Brooks is in outburst again! That means it’s brighter than it was, and possibly visible near Jupiter in the evening twilight. We heard magnitude estimates as bright as +3.8. That would be well within the limit for seeing with the unaided eye, IF the comet were a point source, like a star. But comets are fuzzy objects. Their brightness is spread out over a wider area than stars. Plus, the comet is near the sunset, putting it in a sky brightened by twilight. See Greg Redfern’s photo from the evening of April 3 below. If you’re trying to spot the comet, know that it is moving in front of the stars, and try using binoculars to sweep for it near bright Jupiter! |
