URL: California on alert as San Andreas fault hints at a quake

The tiny town of Parkfield in California has something
unusual about it.

Scientists are always eagerly studying it, because it is
right on top of the San Andreas fault, and has been
called the ‘earthquake capital of the world’.

The famous faultline running from north to south of the
Golden State will soon be due for a tremor, and all eyes
are on the town as the potential epicentre.

Measurements there are behaving a bit oddly, though,
according Luca Malagnini, the director of research at
the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in
Italy.

He told Live Science that he suspects there will be a
quake in the area at some point this year – but not
necessarily at Parkfield.

Yes, ye old Parkfield. We'll have to see. It was once
thought this was one of the most regularly scheduled
quakes coming every 22 yrs...until it didn't.

The earth is dynamic, not static. It's possible that
the variables that caused this reoccurrence have
changed. We won't know until it happens (or doesn't).

Last time, scientists competed to set up all kinds of
experimental equipment expecting to catch an earthquake
as it happened....then were left with none for so many
years.

Mother nature LOVES to make fun of scientists :) That
being said, they do learn something ...even from
failure to appear earthquakes.
