Bears at Heavenly Resort, located in California and Nevada, are not an unusual sight. However, a rare and dramatic incident occurred on December 8, 2024, when a bear collided with a snowboarder on the slopes.
The situation turned even more shocking when Lakshana’s friend, Hunter Martinez, collided with the bear. Fortunately, the bear quickly ran off, and Martinez was unharmed. Lakshana stopped to check on him, and Martinez simply gave him a fist bump before continuing down the slope.
Bears have been spotted at Heavenly before, but such close encounters are extremely rare. Wildlife experts advise skiers and snowboarders to keep their distance if they spot a bear on the mountain. Approaching wildlife can be dangerous for both humans and animals.
If you encounter a bear, immediately alert ski patrol. California Department of Fish and Wildlife experts say that some bears no longer hibernate due to the availability of human-provided food. While seeing a bear on the slopes can be exciting, they warn against getting too close.

I remember back in the 90s when I'd lived on the edge of the National Forest in Meyers up at Lake Tahoe in the middle of January hearing sounds on the front deck of the cabin at night. I'd open the curtain to see two large bears on the deck with about a foot of fresh snow sniffing around. They will eventually go hibernate for a few months. Last week I went for a really hard hike over by Ebbetts Pass up a steep mountain to the peak and right away saw bear signs everywhere in the forestcas all the pine needles were messed with as the bears were scavenging for food underneath. Their tracks lead all the way to the peak and onto the even higher peaks to go hibernate for the winter. They like to go really high up, and will see their tracks in spring in the snow coming down from the higher peaks. In the 80s, a cone of alpine skiers just above Echo Summit on hwy 50 in Tahoe were chased by a hungry bear down the mountain side as they made their escape. You don't want to get caught by a hungry black bear, they will eat you on the spot, can't play dead with them like Grizzlies.

I lived in Meyers for about 2 1/2 yrs, in the late 90's. Bears routinely visited trash day morning. I'd step out on the porch and try to shoo them off. They would just look up, and keep eating. They would finally wonder to the next occupied house. Then I would go out in the dark and clean it all up, before work.

I didn't know you've lived in Meyers. I was at the very back of Cayuga on the edge of the National Forest and would hike up to Echo Peak quite often. We had to finally keep our trash in the house, the bears just wouldn't leave the trash can alone as I would look down on them from above in the A Frame. Lived there in 93 to about 2001 with our rent $550 a month. The cabin was the first to burned down in the Angora fire which burned pver two hundred homes. They did thin the forest behind the cabin back in the 90s, but the winds were blowing about 45 mph that day. It was a young man camping at a pond I used to hike by and didn't properly put out his campfire. Lots of homeless people live in the surrounding forest especially along the Upper Truckee River by the airport. Many have jobs, but the rents now in Tahoe are ridiculous with so many vacant homes that just sit there unused much of the year. I moved back in 2003 til 2009 into another awesome location with my rent at $900 a month. Was able to purchase a house finally with the housing market crash in a very nice location to raise my twins, and where I can go on many hikes. Once our children are done with college, I'm thinking of moving to the mountains in Panama.

Small world for sure. I do recall, and I'm sure you do too, there was a decent earthquake in Tahoe basin in 97/98.
I moved there to do electrical work on the first phase of the Embassy Suites Vacation Resort, on Ski Run Blvd. Next to the Tahoe Queen, or maybe Dixie Queen.
After that, got work in South Meadows in Reno, and bought a house up in Virginia City Highlands.
It's been quite the ride since I left the Pasadena, CA area in Oct/96. with the attempt to work my way to Lake Almanor. I finally made it to the perfect spot Apr/2013.

I've seen the photos that you've posted of your area, very beautiful! I remember that earthquake as it was shown to me in a dream vision around 3 in the morning with the earthquake happening about 2 hours later and could hear Boulders crashing down the mountain sides. I believe the epic center was near Markleville. The two bears I'd mentioned I was shown the previous night in a dream vision. In the dream vision I saw two bears on my front deck at night time. Next night there were two bears on my front deck. The Tahoe area is a very powerful PowerPoint that enabled me to have some powerful dreams. It is too crowded there now and try to avoid the area. But your area sounds awesome. Glad you have a nice place to live Jeff!
This is the one that struck right after my dream vision that early morning. That one that struck in Nevada last week was a good shaker as my christmas tree and the house really shook hard. I had a very vivid dream about 8 or 9 years ago of Mt Lassen going off, really powerful! Hopefully it doesn't happen. It sent a lot debris into the Red Bluff area near I-5.
Markleeville area is certainly no stranger to earthquakes. As we are reminded frequently, even four days ago a M3.4.
The family and I have been visiting Almanor since 1976. But I didn't start my journey out of SoCal until 96, as I mentioned above.
So I missed your 94 Double Springs quake by a couple years. But everywhere I have ever lived, I felt good quakes. SoCal, Tahoe, VC Highlands, Quincy, and Almanor. I don't look for them, they find me. I'm not scared of them, and find them exciting in a strange way.
I would not be surprised if Lassen lets go again, maybe not in my lifetime, but it's still very obvious it's alive and well.

i saw a different bear skier encounter on the news last night...a bear approached a group of beginning skiers and their instructor on the slopes...in a menacing manner...the quick witted and heroic instructor quickly moved down the slope and enticed the bear to chase him, which the bear did for about 3 minutes! global warming is waking bears in hibernation...

I've seen the ground squirrels kill gophers and voles out in the yard. They're very territorial with their burrows, of course..and if another underground rodent accidentally tunnels in, they're probably toast.
Have seen ground squirrels running around carrying gopher heads (blech..ick..not my choice for dinner). This is not new..have seen them do this for years. if Scientists are suprised, it's because they haven't been paying attention and watching.
It's the harsh side of nature, it's not always flowers and babies.

Back in early November we had our first snow. When I woke, I saw bear tracks below the window. Most my neighbors are seasonal or second homers.
So I figured I'd follow the bear tracks a couple doors up and down. The bear did find my tumbler composter, with no damage. When a neighbor arrived that same day, I told him I was tracking the bear tracks. He was wondering why the bear did not eat their small pumpkins. Then I discovered Val's artificial Styrofoam pumpkins on the front porch had teeth marks in them. Must have left a bad taste in his mouth.
The last property I owned near Quincy was really wild, bears everywhere. Many confrontations, but they were alway scared and run away. Every mountain wildlife was abundant. I didn't like the abundance of all the rattlesnake though. Pic above was take be me from from BR window of that property.
