Here's a video from David Paulides today talking about the recent mountain lion attack in California.I do have to disagree about mountain lions not liking dogs, or at least small dog. As I was telling Redhart down below about how two different people lost their dogs due to mountain lions in Mono County, and up in Trinity County by Trinity Lake, a neighborhood was on high alert due to a mountain lion killing pets(dogs).

Yes, they will take a dog right out of your fenced yard. We have a hot-wire that runs atop our dog yard fence that keeps the domestic things in and the wild things out.
We had one kill a german shepherd not too long away. The man startled the cat during the attack long enough to scoop up his dog and get him in the car to rush him to the Vet. Sadly, the dog did not survive. But, when he came home, he found the lion had come back and knocked over patio furniture and shredded the dog's bed as if he was furious his kill had been removed. Rangers think that might have been the same one that my son encountered while weedwhacking. That cat too several pets and the rangers were trying to trap it as it was increasingly becoming a big problem (had become unafraid of humans). Before they could, someone hit it with a car on the road. That one was exhibiting some unsual and dangerous behaviors.
Another mountain lion grabbed and attempted to carry off a corgi from the next door neighbor about 15 yrs ago. She ran after it (not wise, but I understand if it's your dog) throwing rocks and yelling and the cat dropped her dog and took off. Amazingly, the Corgi survived (with a ton of stitches and a cone of shame..thanks to very fast veterinary care).
I agree with you..mountain lions will take a dog, goats, sheep, calf, etc. That being said, they would much rather go after a deer or something that doesn't fight back as hard. We do have rangers here that monitor such encounters.

Sorry about the German Shepard, great dogs, and used to have one called Tootie! I'm perplex why David Paulides would say Mountain Lions don't like dogs, basically saying go ahead and take the dog hiking with you. I don't take my dogs with me just for the reason I don't want a mountain lion getting them. I left a link of the area I hike which is between Tahoe and Yosemite. It's a very rugged volcanic area (geologist's heaven) with many cliffs, and why I always look up at the cliffs and pine trees.

I have to clarify: it wasn't "my" german shepherd, but a neighbors. We were all sorry about what happened to his beloved dog, though.
And, that looks like a beautiful place to hike, for sure! Bet that has some fascinating geology.
My adult dog is a service dog for my husband. He can't hike (leg brace and other issues), so she doesn't either. I sometimes hike when my adult daughter comes for a visit..but I dont' take our dog, Joy..too many dangers (rattlers, bears, coyotes, mt. lions) and she's too valuable to my husband to risk. We have safe areas to go for her..parks and lakes that are safe and public.
