Subject: Aurora G4 Storm This Weekend - May 10, 11, 12 2024 |

If you check any Internet Search Engine you will find multiple reports that state that there is going to be an unusually strong solar storm this coming weekend.
At the time of this posting it is already supposed to have started.
One report that I saw stated that this will be a CME type of storm. That apparently involves actual atoms, ions, and perhaps molecules of matter heading for the Earth.
Other types of solar storms could involve various combinations of photons (light), electrons, protons, and I would guess neutrons.
This present storm is expected to have a G4 rating. G1 would be the weakest and G5 would be the strongest.
Reports are stating that aurora displays should be visible in the upper half of the United States and farther north. I didn't see any information regarding displays in far south regions of the planet.
I am going to guess that there would probably be at least some displays at far south latitudes as the Earth's magnetic fields are especially strong at both its North and South Poles.
People who are actual experts on aurora displays might want to add more information to this report.
These are personal opinions.

If I understood the reports correctly, they are stating that a new solar storm presently underway is the most powerful one to occur in 2 decades.
However, unlike the less intense ones that occurred last weekend, this storm is occurring on the far side of the sun. So, the material and energy being blasted out into space won't hit the Earth. Last weekend's solar storms did hit the Earth.
Something that is interesting is that often, solar storm matter and energy can follow the spiral magnetic field lines that are associated with the sun. Those field lines go from the sun out into our solar system.
So, while sunlight in our solar system travels in a relatively straight line, material and energy that can be affected by magnetic fields can follow a spiral path as it radiates from the sun out into the solar system.
The video below show how those spiral paths can look.

It is my understanding that a result is that even though a solar storm might be on a direct line between the Earth and the sun, some of the storm material and energy will miss the Earth as it isn't traveling in a straight line towards us.
These are personal opinions.
