nuclear physics as a professor and leader of the Los
Alamos Laboratory.

2:48 Insights into the privileged and intense
upbringing of Robert Oppenheimer, his isolation as a
child, and his attempts to distance himself from his
Jewish identity.
8:24 Oppenheimer had a privileged childhood but felt
trapped, leading him to seek adventure in New Mexico.
16:49 J. Robert Oppenheimer's early life, academic
achievements, and political awakening.
23:39 Robert Oppenheimer's involvement with the
Communist Party and his role in the Manhattan Project.
31:19 Oppenheimer, a non-Nobel Prize winning physicist,

49:39 The moral and ethical dilemmas faced by Robert
Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, during the
development and use of the bomb during World War II.
57:14 Oppenheimer tries to convince Truman to establish
an international atomic agency, but Truman dismisses
him and decides to use the bomb. The Soviet Union's
atomic bomb and the arrest of Klaus Fuchs lead to
discussions about building a hydrogen bomb.
1:02:55 Oppenheimer's opposition to the hydrogen bomb
led to suspicions of him working for the Soviets and a
security case against him.
1:09:44 J. Robert Oppenheimer's reputation and career
were destroyed due to false accusations of being a
security risk and working for the Communist Party
during the McCarthy era.
1:20:07 Robert Oppenheimer's reputation is restored
through an interview on the Ed Murrow show, where he
discusses the Institute for Advanced Study and the
moral implications of nuclear weapons.
1:23:57 J. Robert Oppenheimer, the director of the
Institute for Advanced Studies, was a complex and
enigmatic figure who made significant contributions to
science and faced challenges in his personal and
professional life.
1:32:32 Oppenheimer represents the development of

But wait, there's more. Pics that is.

One of those four bedrooms upstairs was mine. I'll know when I find out
which one they filmed in. The pick above was my room, the only one with
the small windows on the right. It looks a lot better now then it did way back
when.

Our old family home is in a movie about a Scientist that invented the Atomic
Bomb.

Then the movie " Back to the Future " was filmed at the Gamble House.

About a Scientist who invents a way to travel back and forth through Time.

He uses Atomic Fusion. ( Mr. Fusion )

I will be gradually going through that video you mentioned. I had not seen it before.

If you have not seen this post then you might take a look at it:

http://earthboppin.net/talkshop/rollem/messages/23046.html

If you do some searching through Internet Archive locations you can find the 7 episode BBS miniseries on Oppenheimer from around 1980.

In my opinion, it is as good as and perhaps even better than the recent 3 hour Oppenheimer blockbuster movie.

I have watched that BBS presentation probably at least 3 times over the years. It is in black and white.

I suspect that in order to have a good understanding of Oppenheimer you almost HAVE to be a scientist yourself.

I am a highly experienced scientist.

However, I had to view probably more than a dozen Youtube videos including that BBS series to develop some understanding of what Oppenheimer was doing and why he did what he did.

One of them is an actual interview with Oppenheimer.

The mental picture that you form by looking at those videos just goes back and forth and around and around in circles.

He was apparently a little on the crazy side. And, he was not the only member of the international scientific community to share that trait.

Of particular interest was the relationship between Oppenheimer and the German scientist and atomic weapons researcher and Nobel Prize winner Werner Heisenberg.

Heisenberg is even more difficult to understand than Oppenheimer.

According to the Youtube videos, he believed that people in Germany were a superior race and that they should be and likely eventually would be in charge of the world.

For that and other reasons, he decided not to accept Oppenheimer's invitation to work in the U.S. doing atomic research.

When the three atomic devices were detonated (the first one was a test), Heisenberg reportedly found it impossible to believe that the U.S. had been able to develop those devices without his help.

He was captured by U.S. forces around the end of the war. He was then sent to a residence in Great Britain under what was probably a type of house arrest.

The international scientific community then gradually forgave him for his war activities and actually forgot about them. And he became something of a hero in the scientific community while at the same time, Oppenheimer was becoming regarded as something of a villain.

That is one of the risks connected with getting involved with politics.

Heisenberg's theories related to the limits that exist on how much we can know about the location and movement of particles such as electrons and photons are at the core of nuclear physics.

He is by far not the only scientist or even the only German scientist who did brilliant and widely recognized research while at the same time having what most people would likely believe is a dangerous philosophy regarding WHAT in our world is important, and WHO is important.

These are personal opinions.

Regards to all,

That is the BBC miniseries rather than BBS. Hope that won't get us into a war with the British.

That was an interesting and informative video. It had a few sections that explained a lot.

It appears that Oppenheimer was a supporter of using the first atomic weapon on a real city because he thought that when people saw just how destructive such a weapon could be it would deter governments from ever again using such a weapon.

I think I saw something in another video that stated that he was against the use of that second weapon.

Whether or not he was correct with his thinking that the use of the first weapon was reasonable is something that historians and philosophers will need to debate and perhaps eventually decide.

Personally I think that he made the wrong decision about the use of that first weapon.

One thing that the video showed is that you DO need to be a scientist in order to understand other scientists.

Scientists including Oppenheimer are not as complex as most people suspect. As a consequence, the scientists get over analyzed.

I believe that people connected with the video tried to read that tremendous complexity into his personality when it really wasn't that complex.

These are personal opinions.

This is probably the best video that I have seen so far regarding this general subject matter.

It amazes me that it was made back in 1965.
