Subject: FCC, What is Causing Major Static on AM Radio Stations? |

When using AM on any of my radios in my apartment, I am getting MAJOR static, so much so that I can barely make out what is being played or said on the station. Also, the AM stations on my car radio get that same static when I drive into the apartment's lower level garage.
Before this problem started in my apartment, and even now, on occasion, when driving by certain houses the same static happens on my car's AM radio stations.
WTF is causing that? It sure seems like my and everyone's right to listen to free speech or free anything on the AM stations is being impinged.
Last night, for 5 glorious seconds, I was able to get crystal clear, static free sound from my AM station.
Is it wifi boosters or is it something else? Whatever it is, I think it should be illegal! I want my static free AM stations back!!!

Despite the fact that we have several local stations, I've never been able to get AM stations on a radio without extreme static in about 30 years. FM is slightly better.
That said, if you already have home wifi....I don't know about your region, but where I live I could stream most stations on the computer or phone, they're a lot clearer on the wifi and 3g networks than they are on the radio proper.
Can also get stations around the country freely thru wifi.
That said, I could be out of date, I haven't had home wifi in about two years, price is too high at $39 a month (and that's the discount plan). I don't do TV either.

Good luck my friend. What is causing this is all these energy saving items such as light bulbs and the appliances and yes the WIFI junk and all the computers and on and on.
It has been getting worse and worse over the years and the FCC has looked into it and did find that Home Depot was selling industrial lighting equipment for home use which is against the law as it is not FCC part-15 compliant. They were fined but a lot of this is still out there until failure.
Add in the grow lights folks use to grow plants indoors, fish tank lights and heaters and all the other modern convenience stuff connected to the AC power lines, which are big radiating antennas, the more you will have to contend with.
Sadly each item meets the FCC compliance but taken as a whole you get the interference you get.
As a ham radio operator I have been aware for years of the crap put out by consumer devices but I am one of the fortunate ones as I have acreage around me.
Those living in the burbs and cities have a horrible noise level so communications is near impossible.
Sadly, this is all part of modern life anymore, living in a EMF polluted environment.

Hi Leslie and Blindhog
AM radio is almost impossible here. And in my vehicle it's awful if you share the road with power lines next to you. It's Dirty Power, most likely from just what you said Leslie.
Since AM radio is so important to me, this is my work around. I can stream anything from the computer. Just plug this Whole House Transmitter into the earphone jack, turn my FM stereo system on, or any FM radio for that matter, and bam-mo, beautiful clear sound at home.
I guess I am contributing to the problem also in many ways, but since I don't own a smart phone, thats my WIFI credit trade.

That is one way and back when C2C had good programming with Art I use to download and then play thru the mini-FM transmitter like you mention except mine was home made.
Anyway, it is hard to do if out in the vehicle and I am one of those who does not have a dumb phone that has to be on all the time with microwave radiation being emitted.
Sadly streaming, and letting the trackers know what you listen to, has become the way now days.
What needs to be done is clean up the garbage being emitted by the so called energy efficient devices that do not meet FCC specifications but, sadly, even if they do the cumulative effect of their radiation still pollutes the AM broadcast band and even into shortwave.
What really needs to happen is the AM broadcasters need to push the issue with the FCC as they are losing revenue by people not being able to hear the programming and commercials that pay for the programming.

If you have ever experienced a power outage and turned on the AM radio I am sure you noticed how quiet the static was and how clear the AM stations came in with the information you needed to know about what was happening with the power.
Those days are far and few between and sadly, will only get worse with all the computer related energy saving devices in the homes.
Can't figure out why one needs a smart refrigerator. . .

"Can't figure out why one needs a smart refrigerator. ."
It's in case you don't have Alexa, Echo Dot, Nest or smart phone so they can still listen inside your home. Why would any 'smart person' volunteer to be recorded inside their home???
