I stumbled on these vids today. Quite interesting they are, with different ones on different autopsy topics. The one I got interested in was the one on aging.
The anatomy lessons are demonstrated on cadavers that are preserved with some type of plastic. Various autopsy topics are covered in all the vids and generally facts about bodies under different conditions are told, in this case, specific points about the aging body that are not well known methinks. There are live models to demonstrate the overall shapes and ages, kind of like an art class with live and dead models- :o In one of the videos, the lecturer drew the external organs on the torso, to show where the kidneys are located, then they switch to the internal model, to show where the transplanted kidneys are actually placed, lower down, in the groin! I assumed transplanted kidneys went where they usually are found, to the sides of the waist. They go back and forth, from live body to cadaver, which lends a kind of coherence of life and death and certainly makes the lesson points more dramatic- :)
There are other more gruesome topics, like violent crime autopsies but I'll have to work up to that one, if I do at all. I am impressed how they organized the entire series and their presentations are really interesting. Also, they demonstrate what happens when an organ is traumatized, e.g., in a bowel obstruction, with a view that smacks a little of Dr. Oz's simple-minded demonstrations (sorry, Dr. Oz) only this uses the real thing. Cool.
I did not know that when a person ages, the jaw and facial bones decrease so much that, like a baby, they start holding their heads further back when they lie down! In contrast, an adult usually hangs their head down when they lie down. Did you know this or am I the only one that didn't know this?
If you can get through all the cadaver lessons, there's likely some useful and interesting facts to be gleaned about human anatomy, what different parts look like normally, and the changes they go through, under different conditions. There are 4 parts, so I'm jumping ahead on the link that is Part 4, hopefully not a spoiler, lol.
I started with the one on poisoning but didn't make it all the way through. It is horrible what poisons do to your liver, that's all I can tell you. Then I spied the vid on aging, one I can relate real well to- :D
The lessons are a product of the 'Institute of Plastination' in Heidelberg, Germany.
Cheers!
