How very cool. Will we see S wave alert apps in the US for smart phones or this Grillo S Wave Radio Alarm.
Oklahoma has tornado sirens, maybe some quake prone regions could have S wave sirens for quakes.

60 seconds could save your life. enough time to get on your feet and out to the street or crouch beside a refrigerator that can save you if the roof comes down.

Yes, he got out to a safe place because everything went well and the epicenter was apparently some distance away, so he would have been safe staying where he was. I have no idea what I would do in that situation. If the quake was stronger and closer to him, perhaps then it would have been better to duck and cover right where he was. What would you have done, Petra?

Hi Don,

It seems some folks keep overlooking the fact that the quake near the coast was hundreds of miles from Mexico City and thus having a minute of time is easy and presented no real threat to anyone there, though of those who died at the coast and lost their homes no alarm would have helped them.

The fact is that in California in major metropolitan areas such as LA and SF a few seconds of time from a major earthquake in close proximity won't help anyone. And odd isn't it that people don't appreciate time itself and to that end a simple test by placing a cup of water in the microwave, pressing start and running off to do any task will teach one what that means, though if someone has 60 seconds it means the quake is far away and not life threatening in most cases.

And while I know you don't believe in ear tones in reviewing performance as to where quakes arrive based upon cognizance of seconds heard by persons I determined some years ago we are not aware we are hearing a sound for 1/4 of a second which for us equals 9.4 miles and is now employed in formulating earthquake predictions. Though if one might ask how close I've ever been to the epicenter of a predicted earthquake, it was 1 mile for a quake in Southern CA in 2007. That's for one sound, heard one time.

There's no doubt our long term seismic quiescence will end with one or more big bangs, a hefty death toll and damage most can't imagine, but as to the beep beep some may think is good enough, they'll learn it isn't.

Petra
