an open mind and the ability to process new information needed here ... the "electric comet" video deals with new information that does not conform to previously held theories and establishment science needs to grapple with that new information in a non-biased manner ... not with more of the same refusal to confront this new information so prevalent among some posters here

Hi HG,

> request was for credentialed scientist with demonstrable credibility

That's just another empty request. If you really want a "credentialed scientist" (something you seem to scorn) try astronomer Phil Platt. Or try in a forum with astronomers.

Of course you really don't need a "credentialed scientist". Any reasonable intelligent middle schooler can refute the electric universe stuff. It was just a last gasp of maintaining Velikovsky back in the 1970's and never gained support. While it has become dogma of a small group of anti-mainstream folks the obvious faults means it never attracted anyone with an interest in real science.

From the most basic faults such as claiming "existing theory" doesn't expect comets to have dry surfaces anyone can provide the info.

Face it, you know the evidence shows it's wrong. That's why you won't discuss it and that's why you post on a small, low volume forum such as this requesting only a response by the thing you disrespect the most, a "credentialed scientist". It's the typical flailing against the mainstream by someone who knows they don't have a leg to stand on.

Cheers

Jim

Its the Smartest Kid In The Class syndrome. There's no cure.

You will usually find them not amongst the other Smartest Kids In
The Class, but rather elsewhere where they can Wow! The audience
with their superior grasp of superior things that only The Smartest
Kids In The Class know. They rarely publish where the other
Smartest Kids In The Class can pick apart their reasoning, but rather
choose those venues where they will not be taken to task.

but that not being the case i will assume that the scientific establishment is incapable of coping with the humiliation of their "burned" theories

any possibility of a full repudiation of "icy snowballs" being ejected from the "Oort Cloud" will probably continue to be an unfulfilled expectation

some will be pleased to note that the Wikipedia entry continues to represent the icy snowball "fairy tale" story (with adjustments to account for the lack of the outgassing of water vapor)

Hi HG,

> it was my hope that an actual scientist would respond to post

Hehe.. you expected some scientist to pop up out of nowhere??

Shouldn't that be on the "Just for Laughs" board?

Seriously HG, such empty proclamations of victory are a bit sad.

> any possibility of a full repudiation of "icy snowballs" being ejected from the "Oort Cloud" will
> probably continue to be an unfulfilled expectation

Yes, true that. With all the evidence supporting the current views and only a few neo-Velikovskian wack-a-doodles supporting the electric comet claims this is likely to be a lifelong unfulfilled expectation.

But hey, if you ever want to discuss the actual evidence just go ahead and respond without all the empty claims of victory. That's the way these discussion boards typically work.

Jim

Hi HG,

I'd say science resolved this one long ago based on observational evidence. The electric comet thing is dogma clung to by people that want Velikovsky to be true and refuse to look at the evidence.

Hi HG,

Well the whole electric comet thing is an offshoot of Ralph Juergens "electric Sun" ideas in from his 1970's attempt to resurrect Velikovsky's failed ideas. It never caught on as all the evidence showed in was wrong. In the 40 years since Juergens proposed this all observations from all spacecraft have shown it was wrong. That's why it's only supported by wackadoodles like the Thunderbolts guys who write essay after essay riling against NASA and ignoring all the evidence.

Science is about evidence. Old theories are overturned by new evidence. Pseudoscience is about dogmatically clinging to counter-mainstream pet theories regardless of the evidence.

I enjoyed reading Velikovsky's books, however it becomes quickly apparent that such things could only happen in a cartoon universe.

Cheers

Jim
