Yep.

Anyone who says otherwise betrays their ignorance of what "science" is. Science is not perfect. Science doesn't have all the answers. Science makes mistakes.

But, it learns from those mistakes. It finds the answers it didn't before. It grows. (which is a lot more than can be said of many of the deniers)

It works.

Anyone who still disagrees need only look at the modern world around them. If it were not for science and scientific thinking, all the technology they use to express that dissenting opinion on the 'interwebz' would not have been able to do so.

For anyone who lives in the modern world, the success of science surrounds us every second of our lives, and it is undeniable.

Ryan, you are assigning attributes to science which are in reality properly attributed to persons - human nature.

Science is no more than a tool.

To use a cliche of an analogy, do guns kill people? No. People kill people. Guns are nothing more than a tool, which can just as easily be used to aid in the survival of people. How the tool is used is up to the humans using it. The gun itself can do nothing until someone picks it up and uses it.

Yes, science has been used to do 'bad things'. But it has also, and I'd say inarguably, been used to do far more good.

Anyway, your comment is just a red herring. It does nothing to disprove that science works.

Whatever you may think of Monsanto is irrelevant (although I have a pretty good idea)... It still does not demonstrate a failure of science. It may demonstrate a failure of people.

A person using or misusing science for nefarious or ignorant reasons is NOT a failure of science. It is a failure of the people trying to use it.

Your arguments are making it increasingly clear that you do not understand what "science" *IS*.

I don't argue against the idea that there are problematic situations in the world that were enabled through the use of science. But again, it's people using the tool of science to do those things. As with any tool, it can be used for good and bad. A machete can be used to harvest a crop, or it can be used to commit genocide (Rwanda).

Science can be used to improve life - antibiotics, nuclear power, airliners, fertilizers.

Science can also be used to take life - biological weapons, nuclear bombs, bombers, agent orange.

"science is like a kid with a machine gun..."

And who is to blame? the machine gun? or the kid? or.... ????

To paraphrase a radio host I listen to, you can place a loaded gun on a table in the middle of a crowded shopping mall. That gun is going to sit there. it might sit there for years. But nothing is going to happen unless someone picks it up and starts shooting.

The gun isn't going to do anything on it's own. It's the one using it.

If you feel humanity has received nothing of value out of science (which is another argument entirely), then whose fault is that? Is it science's fault? or humanity's? Science will do nothing on it's own. It's like the gun sitting on the table.

And to pull from your other post...

"I don't care about any of that shit... "

And therein lies your problem.

Ryan, it's obvious you despise what humanity is doing to the world. I don't blame you. And much of it I probably agree with you on. The difference where we each lay the blame. I blame the people.

Put the blame where it belongs.

Brian

The faults you attribute to science are the fault of the scientists. If the scientists do not follow the science, then they have erred. The faults you seek to place on science are the faults of fallible human beings, human beings who may disregard the science, the evidence, the results due to human biases, desires, goals, agendas. Those things are the fault of humans, not science.
