Theories of the Aether Articles relating to the Emergence of Scientific Theories of the Cosmic Aether "Thus he then classified living creatures into genera and species, and divided them in every way until he came to their elements, which he called the five shapes and bodies - aether, fire, water, earth and air." - Xenocrates, On the life of Plato Web Publication by Mountain Man Graphics, Australia

Article 17 - The Orgone Research of Wilhelm Reich ... James DeMeo
This article is a response to Martin Gardner's Attack on Reich and Orgone Research in the Skeptical Inquirer, and was prepared by by James DeMeo, Ph.D., Director of the Orgone Biophysical Research Lab, which is concerned with the building upon the discoveries of the Late Natural Scientist, Wilhelm Reich, M.D.
All this harkens back to a similar, historically important difference between the world views of Galileo, history’s greatest empiricist, and Newton, a man who was preoccupied with theology. Galileo looked to the energetic aether as probable prime mover, at work in the here and now. He was antagonistic towards "revealed truth", and demanded that his critics reproduce his experiments before making judgments, to "look into the telescope". But not so Newton, who argued for dominance of the Church over matters of experimental science. He proclaimed the aether to be static and immobile, without a shred of evidence in order to eliminate its participation in the ordering and movements of the Heavens. That role, he believed, belonged only to the Christian anthropomorphic God. Newton’s theological restraints on scientific inquiry have remained to this day, and are even championed by a scientistic community bent on a near total denial of the bioenergetic in the natural world. In the late 1800s, Michelson and Morley searched for but did not detect Newton’s static aether. But their student, Dayton Miller, did detect and fully document a moving, dynamic, metal reflectable form of it. And so did Reich, who discovered this same dynamic energy as the sensible and measurable sexual-biological-cosmic orgone energy. Reich’s works not only undermine many popular "facts" regarding human behavior and the origins and functioning of life, but also all the various mechanistic and mystical theories of science which demand the absence of a dynamic energy in the natural world. Gardner and the CSICOP gang oppose Reich not because he failed to provide good empirical evidence for such an energy, but for just the opposite reason, because he did.

... 2) Model G Kinetic Ether
This particular ether model was developed by the American physicist Paul LaViolette. Dr. LaViolette received his bachelors degree in physics from Johns Hopkins and received a Ph.D. in systems theory from Portland State University. He is currently the director of the non-profit Starburst Foundation. He has been developing his theory since the 1970s and had it formally published in the International Journal of General Systems in the mid 1980s.
The Kinetic Ether is the fundamental component of Paul's overall theory known as Subquantum Kinetics: A general systems approach to microphysics/cosmology. Within the Model G framework, the ether behaves similarly to a transmuting/kinetic gradient field composed of postulated Etherons. Dr. LaViolette's ether can be thought of as a feedback driven, transmuting open system. While there are a number of reacting/transmuting etheron species within the ether, only X-ons (embodying negative charge), Y-ons (embodying positive charge), and G-ons (embodying gravity) have a visible impact in our Universe. These etherons are locked into cross catalytic reaction loops that are self-generative and self-organizing. This gives rise not only to all four fundamental forces of nature (when sufficient etheron concentrations are achieved), but also provides a logical/consistent theory for how matter continuously creates itself in the Universe in the form of soliton wave structures (i.e. dissipative structures).
3) Liquid Crystal Aether
This aether model is the brainchild of British physicist Harold Aspden. Dr. Aspden received his Ph.D. from Trinity College Cambridge, was a patented engineer, and served as a Patent Attorney for IBM for 20 years. He developed his model/theory over the course of 50+ years from 1955 until he passed away in 2011, motivated in large part by his doctoral research into ferromagnetism.
Using his aether model and operating from first principles, Aspden was able to derive/predict a number of impressive numerical values prior to the availability of computational technologies. He correctly derived the proton-electron mass ratio. He correctly predicted the value of the fine-structure constant years before its 'official discovery'. He also predicted with a high degree of accuracy the magnetic moment of the proton.
Aspden referred to the aether as 'liquid-crystal' because it behaved as a dynamic fluid-like continuum that also contains crystalline structure. He borrows a fair amount of terminology from the Standard Model in describing the aether, so Aspden's model could also be considered a hadronic aether. Aspden saw the aether as an electrically charged entity but neutral overall. It consists of quons that form into lattice-structures and define the electromagnetic frame of reference; muons that define the inertial frame of reference help balance Quon rotation, and help initiate particle creation; and tauons act as gravitons that operate in tandem with the muon continuum.
4) Cosmic Neutrino Background
Wallace Thornhill an Australian electric engineer and Konstantin Meyl a German physicist both adhere to the idea that the vast neutrino radiation pervading the Universe can be likened to a classical, atmospheric aether. Both the ambient cosmic neutrino background and ubiquitous neutrino emissions radiating incessantly from stars are well established within the corpus of standard cosmology. Neutrinos are truly strange: exhibiting no discernible charge, little mass, and likely possessing majorana (acting as own anti-particle) qualities.
On the topic Thornhill has stated: "A vast sea of unreactive neutrinos could be the long debated 'ether' that permeates space. Space is not a void. We then have an electrically responsive medium for the transmission of light in which the characteristic velocity of an electrical disturbance in that medium is the so-called speed of light, c.
In the [Electric Universe] model, because electrons and positrons are composed of a kind of sub-quark labeled as 'subtrons', these virtual particles don't truly annihilate but rather merge, emit most of their energy as a photon, and change their states into a neutrino."
Virtual particle pair transmutation/decay is happenstance in the Standard Model of particle physics. The question concerning whether particles truly/totally annihilate one another was also deliberated on in depth by product of this process the late physicist/relativist Mendel Sachs. While he never postulated neutrino formation as a byproduct, he did believe that particle annihilation was an illusion and that deeply-bound zero energy pairs (that only provide indirect hints of their existence) permeate space and likely constitute what we know as 'dark matter'.
And in Dr. Konstantin Meyl's view: "Neutrinos are [field configurations], which move through space as [solitons]. They were introduced by Pauli as massless but energy carrying particles to be able to fulfill the balnce sheet of energy for the beta decay. Nothing would be more obvious than to technically use the neutrino radiation as an energy source."
5) Dipolar Electric Continuum
Frederick David Tombe is an Irish physicist who taught in Belfast for a number of years. His model harkens back to classical conceptions of the aether as conceived of by J.C. Maxwell and E.T. Whittaker. Tombe acknowledges that the aether is dynamic: stretchable, compressible, and filled with vortices. But there also exists a superimposed space on top of the fluid aether, what he calls the electric sea which is composed of rotating electron-positron dipoles (positronium/vortexes) that create whirlpool dynamics within the aether.
As other models indicate electron-positron dipoles (EPD) are more than likely epiphenomenal, dense aether constructs (i.e. soliton particle pairs). They rotate around one another to form vortexes (similar to when positronium circles into itself and 'annihilates') that entrain aether further around/within themselves. These dipolar vortices also settle themselves into double-helix patterns that then constitute electric/magnetic lines of force. According to Tombe this model draws most heavily from Maxwell's classical aether even though it appears analogous to Dirac's negative energy sea.
