the "World Turtle" (also referred to as the Cosmic Turtle, the World-bearing Turtle, or the Divine Turtle) myth is found around the globe and has probably been in existence for millenia
did it propagate around the globe because it was a useful explanation ... that is ... a scientific theory ... for the tectonic catastrophes that would ... from time to time ... wrack the entire planet
the tradition of the ancient Greeks has the poet Homer reporting that ... at times ... the whole earth "rang like a bell"
was Homer making a scientific observation by using this metaphor to describe the phenomena we know as an earthquake?
throughout the ages ... humanity has constantly attempted to rationalize the irrationality of nature ... and i would suggest that ... though they didn't name it "science" ... that process was indeed the science of the day
because ... where the rubber meets the road ... in an earthquake of magnitude 9+ ... where the shaking goes on for five to ten minutes ... all the "scientific" explanations you've ever read ... fly out the window with the rest of the shattered china ... and you are left wondering about that turtle

I'm sure it was adapted as most indgenious people associated with the animals in their myths...but it does help to explain probably in their day things like an slow contintental drift, and as you just said earthquakes, and in general the earth's crust. You must remember they pass thier information on to the younger set that needs simple explanations they can remember to pass on to the next generation also. Kids could relate to the example of an tuttle in science.

i just read Terry Rachett 'Small Gods' referring to that thought...a wonderful tale woven with lots of philosphy and thought of what is and what isn't and what 'gods' are and aren't, and the turtle that is a 'small god'...very fun and mind tweaking

do you know the story of Jung and Freud arguing in Freud's office ... they were both getting really "hot under the collar" with each other ... and suddenly an oak table in the room cracked under the strain ... Jung did seem a bit surprised ... in fact ... the phenomena seemed to give support to his argument ... Freud scoffed ... and said there was nothing to it ... pure chance ... and just then the table cracked again
it's been said that when it was time to "calculus" ... the universe "calculused" ... in two individuals ... at roughly the same time ... Newton and Leibniz both arrived at the same mathematical construct ... Newton from the differential side ... Leibniz from the integral side ... the different sides of the same "calculus coin"
August Kekule "dreamed" the hexagonal structure of the benzene molecule ... he saw the "worm ourbouros" in his dream ... and when he awoke he realized that it must be hexagonal in shape
