Multiple instances of bird flu found in San Mateo County By Matthew Tom, Homepage editor Feb 6, 2025
H5N1, known as bird flu, has been found in San Mateo County this week, according to state and local health officials.
San Mateo County officials said Thursday that bird flu was found in a stray cat in Half Moon Bay. Officials said a family took the cat to the Peninsula Humane Society when it began showing symptoms. Lab tests confirmed the cat, which was euthanized, had H5N1.
Earlier in the week, in an unrelated case, bird flu was found in a backyard poultry flock in San Mateo County, the California Department of Food and Agriculture confirmed on Monday.
The San Mateo County Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures advises poultry owners to watch for signs of bird flu in their flock, and to take appropriate measures, such as washing hands before and after handling birds and disinfecting footwear, to reduce the risk of spreading bird flu.
"It’s important for residents who keep chickens and other birds in their yards to protect their flock and themselves from H5N1. There are simple actions every flock owner can take to prevent the disease from spreading," said Koren Widdel, San Mateo County's agricultural commissioner.
Pet owners are also being told to watch for signs of avian influenza. Pets infected with H5N1 may experience a loss of appetite, lethargy and fever, along with neurologic signs, including circling, tremors, seizures or blindness, according to health officials.
Bird flu has been spreading, killing millions of wild and domestic birds worldwide over the past two years, among other animals.
Nationwide, the virus has been detected in 84 commercial and backyard flocks in the past month, with 10.7 million birds on those sites, according to the latest online data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It has also been confirmed in dozens of dairy farms.
While human cases are rare and are mostly found among farmworkers, one person has died from bird flu — a Louisiana man over the age of 65 who was hospitalized with severe respiratory symptoms.
