134 degree.

I have personally passed that thermometer on the way back from Lake Mead
several times. In about 1990, pulling the boat with my little S10 blazer, most
of the trip it was with the A/C off, but going down the Baker Grade, enjoyed
the A/C to keep our speed down. It was 120 degree in Baker.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rising out of a small parking lot in the aptly named town of Baker, California,
the thermometer stands at exactly 134 feet tall in honor of a 134 degree
record heat in 1913.
I was just telling a friend in Iowa about that
thermometer this very morning. I remember going through
there in an overheating RV with 5 screaming children one
year. NOT fun lol.
We had to turn off the AC in the vehicle and were
passing around ice packs to use until we found a
resturant to stop at (air conditioned) and allow the RV
to cool off.
Family trips...always an adventure.
Similar but not quite so hot experience with four kids
in an old van ...engine in middle ..no air conditioner
and the hottest temp i had ever experience driving from
Parker to Havasu which i think at the time was about 118
....i wanted to jump out and run in front of a car.
Can't imagine anything hotter than that, wow.
I know the area well, or should I say Knew.
My family from my Moms side had a small cabin in Cedar Glen until 2003,
when it was destroyed in the "Old Fire".
We enjoyed it before I was born, and my kids also for 15 years.
It was close enough to Lake Arrowhead, to hear the louder boats ripping
across the lake. We spent lots of time Jeeping the back roads, and
swimming in Deep Creek.
Sure do miss that place, but moved on to greener pastures. But as you may
have heard, Plumas County almost completely burned in 2021 in the Dixie
Fire. Luckily our house, and surrounding areas were spared. Only a few
areas on the west side of the lake burned to the shoreline.
Interesting to read. About the old fire - yes 2003.
We had a small vacation home in GVL but thankfully it
was okay. At the same time we lived down in Alta Loma
Rancho area near the top of Sapphire. The fire came
right up to the fence. Up to that point we hadn't
evacuated but then had to make a run for it...and we
didn't know at the time we thought a son of ours was
following behind but he stayed and luckily a guy that
lived on our road had a water tanker truck used in his
construction business. He and Seth literally saved all
the houses along the fence line at the top of sapphire
near where we lived. a few trees on the property
burned. Anyway interesting that you enjoyed all the
areas I now enjoy. Yes CedarGlen was hit so hard. We
often go there to the Mal t Shop but haven't been in
awhile. We walk the shore trails around Lake Arrowhead
a lot, going into them through Peninsula and by the
docks, etc. Yes those fires I followed closely,
couldn't believe what was going on up there. Glad your
place and others were spared.
The Malt Shop was always a Fav.
In the early days, when we were young, Mom and Dad would take us to a
place on Lake Arrowhead called " Totem Pole Island". It was not really an
island, but a peninsula. We had to walk quite a ways to get there, because it
was before the road all the way around the lake was completed.
From what I understand, the totem poles were put there for a Hollywood
movie. The classic movie "The Great Race" (not at totem pole island) but
has great scenes at Lake arrowhead, staring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon,
Natalie Wood, Peter Falt, and so many others.
Also Lake Arrowhead was the place where the Hollywood stars went during
Prohibition, to drink apple wine and moonshine made at Squints Ranch.
More at link I found.
Hey I'll check that link out tomorrow. I like hearing
your stories. Now I can look for some of these places
if they are still around. I go to a street called
"Peninsula" which is off North Road. This is where I
park usually to go down to a trail. If I do the whole
part of the shoreline there I end up at UCLA Campus.
Another trail I use to take but they locked the gates
is right by the resort which is by the upper part of
the village near Staters. As you go past the resort
down to a lower area the gate use to be open.
the third part of the shoreline I could get to (since
I'm not a member) is what I call the Docks Walk. Its
near MacKay Park and I can take some stairs down and do
a long walk there.
Always have my camera because it's all so beautiful
around there.
Photograph of totem poles at Lake Arrowhead, ca.1950. Three totem poles can be seen next to each other at center. The totem pole at
left has a figure carved at top with a beak that faces left. The pole at center is shorter than the other two and also has figures on it that
appear to have beaks. What appears to be a beaver can be seen carved on top of the totem pole at right, while a beak can be seen
towards the middle of the pole. Trees can be seen in the background, while small bushes are visible in the foreground.
The link above is a fun site, about Lake Arrowhead film history.
This link below is a map of Lake Arrowhead, showing where Totem Pole Point is. But your going to have to copy and paste it into search
box. I could not get it to work as a clickable link, from bopp's html help page. I'm doing something wrong.
thanks, checking it out now. I guess those standing
poles aren't there anymore....or are they? I've walked
quite a bit of the shore but haven't seen these - the
parts that are privately gated you can't get down to the
shoreline but I'm always zooming in to get pics while on
the opposite shore. I'll check the link out. again,
thanks..
