Dec 22, 2022 #ev #charging #dcfc Kyle finds out that the new Electrify America chargers that they co-developed with BTC don't work in cold temperatures. He also heads to ChargePoint, EVgo, and other EA chargers to see if they have similar issues in this cold snap.

10% of the cars sold world wide were full electric vehicles. the bad will be weeded out.

my son filled me in on EVs ten years ago ... he told me then that the battery is not under warranty and is an item that the owner must pay for replacement ... he said a consumable item or something

so 1% of us own a EV. Pam, I'm one. first off my Tesla MS-LR has a heater that warms up the battery so it will charge when cold out. Tesla has a, my guess, advanced battery management system it heats the battery up when cold and on desert hot days cools it. the newer/est cars use a heat pump. so reading what you wrote makes one wonder if other EVs are as well equipped. did they forget this issue/ charging when in cold climate or charging when hot, you do not want it to catch fire as a recent recall of Chevy Bolt for carpet fires. do note when I put in to my GPS a address for a fast Tesla charging station my GPS also reads out pre-heating battery when close enough.
I do also want to point out that in North Carolina I read that a few Tesla charging stations would not charge. reason I say this is during a heat wave in Texas Tesla charge was at one half to reduce electric use and keep folks AC's running, it was over 100 degrees. and a note as this week in TN we had rolling black outs that did not help. that may have been the situation in NC. "all charger stations" may have been in the same boat. hope that helps you understand it a bit more. I charge mostly at home, 110V outlet.

The video I posted said so too, about Tesla rechargers. If you watched it. He discusses all sorts of reason why these he tested might not be working. Have to watch the vid. Not going to answer for him. And he also mentioned the 1 percent owning the EV's. I'm not misunderstanding anything! Lol.

Tesla?...Whoa, must be nice...except for the frequent battery fires which cannot be extinguished...say what? No thanks at any price. What does that do to your household elect. bill?
Even 1% seems high...most people choose hybrids, giving them a backup, at least, in case solar is intermittent and unreliable over long stretches, and too few charging stations. The projected infrastructure by 2030 is unrealistic, imo, and will probably be extended. Gotta work on those fire risks, too!
Seems a little oblivious to most people's real- life financial situation, also...wages are not keeping up with expenses, especially in just getting by...63% are living paycheck to paycheck according to the latest polls. Yeah, as I said, must be nice!

when the power grid goes down - how are they supposed to charge their vehicles? So between cold and no power, we are supposed to feel confident in transitioning to only EVs???? So that the country can become immobilized?

As if the gas stations, dependent on wired electricity and trucked in gas from the few sources available, trucked in by trucks dependent on a different gas than cars will be so much better?
At least electric cars can be recharged with solar.

and how many homes have solar for backup? How many charging stations have solar for backup? And if the temps are below
If the EV’s battery is too cold, it may take a lot more energy in order to start. Lithium-ion batteries within the car themselves are sensitive to temperatures, preferring a range of 60 to 80°F. If possible, keep the car in a garage so that it is less susceptible to becoming overly cold.
The best defense in cold weather is not letting the EV get below a 20% charge. That 20% charge acts as reserve in case the battery is too cold and needs to pull from that stored energy to begin the charging process.
And another issue in cold weather is with regular gas- powered cars, the engine provides heat to the car cabin just by running. The amount of heat the engine gives off helps kick the car heater into gear. Being that EVs do not have engines, the battery needs to supply heat in a more energy-intensive way, that comes soley from the battery's power.
And not too many of the general public can afford the EVs with bigger batteries that are more expensive than their smaller-battery counterparts - think $100,000 versus $30,000.
And dont be calling AAA for a charge - not all the AAAs can recharge an EV, and if they can, they are limited in the number of service calls they can do.

They have a solution for cold/charging stations?
Probably costs a dollar someone wasn't willing to spend.
