Subject: Civilization will crumble by 2050 if climate change is left unchecked. |
URL: A damning report has proclaimed that human civilization will crumble and die if global climate change remains unchecked. |
|
If modern life continues to depend on greenhouse gas emissions, we will pass a tipping point in 2050 from which there is no turning back.
According to an Australian climate and policy think tank, climate change will set off a cataclysmic chain of events leading to our demise.
The report, published by the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration in Melbourne, says global warming is a ‘near- to mid-term existential threat to human civilization.’
David Spratt, the organisation’s research director, compiled the report alongside Ian Dunlop, a former senior executive of Shell and former chairman of the Australian Coal Association. Two men that know what they’re talking about.
The authors say the environmental crisis is larger and more complex than anything humans have ever faced. If we continue to live as we do, climate change will create an ecological collapse, leading to disease pandemics, a lethal heatwave and ultimately nuclear war.
They say that general climate models fail to take into account the Earth’s complexity. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) used a model to set out the target of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. So according to the report – even if we hit this ambitious target (and there’s little evidence to suggest we will) the outcome could be much scarier than politicians like to think.
The authors write:
‘Massive nonlinear events in the global environment give rise to massive nonlinear societal events. In this scenario, nations around the world will be overwhelmed by the scale of change and pernicious challenges, such as pandemic disease. The internal cohesion of nations will be under great stress, including in the United States, both as a result of a dramatic rise in migration and changes in agricultural patterns and water availability. The flooding of coastal communities around the world, especially in the Netherlands, the United States, South Asia, and China, has the potential to challenge regional and even national identities. Armed conflict between nations over resources, such as the Nile and its tributaries, is likely and nuclear war is possible.’
‘This scenario provides a glimpse into a world of “outright chaos” on a path to the end of human civilisation and modern society as we have known it, in which the challenges to global security are simply overwhelming and political panic becomes the norm. Yet the world is currently completely unprepared to envisage, and even less deal with, the consequences of catastrophic climate change.’
Can the situation described above be averted?
The authors say that it can, but the plan to deal with it has to be put into action right this second. We have, at most, ten years to shift the entire planet to a zero-carbon-emissions-system.
Achieving this will be ‘akin in scale to the World War II emergency mobilization,’ the authors write.
They suggest that the current reason we aren’t dealing with climate change seriously enough is that policymakers are given models and suggestions that are too conservative.
The facts on climate change are unequivocal: The planet’s average surface temperature has risen about 0.9 degrees Celsius (1.62 degrees Fahrenheit) since the late 19th century. This has been driven by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere. The world’s oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat and will continue to do so until the trend is reversed.
‘A high-end 2050 scenario finds a world in social breakdown and outright chaos,’ Mr Spratt said.
‘But a short window of opportunity exists for an emergency, global mobilisation of resources, in which the logistical and planning experiences of the national security sector could play a valuable role.’
‘A doomsday future is not inevitable,’ agreed Admiral Chris Barrie, former Australian Defence Force chief and author of the paper’s foreword.
‘But without immediate drastic action our prospects are poor,’ he added.

News flash - the sun going micro nova in the 2040s [or sooner] will probably do more to destroy the planet than so called climate change which is really the sun gearing up for its cyclical 12,000 yr event. Nothing man can do about it because it is the Sun.

You sound like a little kid.. who decided they don't need to do their chores because mom and dad ain't home.
You agreed to do the dishes before you can watch tv, but mom and dad went out to whatever and you're home alone, so fuck it, right?
I always love the logic my kids brought to their arguments when they tried ditching their share, minor, of the chores..
We'd get home, the kids would look guilty as sin as they tried to come up with an excuse as to why they had cookie crumbs all over their face, the dirty dishes still filled the sink, and their homework untouched.. but god knows the tv was on.
Yeah, you sound pretty silly.. but hey, my kids grew up and became whole.. and capable of organizing their lives, and doing far more than the frickin chores. Hopefully you will too.
One can hope, right?.

man is a fool if he can do better than God. We do weather modifications and screw things up. We do genetic changes and we live with the result. We change Gods laws into our laws and do we hav e a better life? Get real!
