Interesting opinion article from a Senior-level environmental science student at UNR.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To understand how we got here, we must look to the arrival of the first European colonists in the American West.
When Spanish missionaries sailed up the California coast, a thin haze of smoke seemed to hang over the state
every summer – the result of 4.5 million estimated acres of low-intensity fires burning annually across the state,
removing decadent vegetation and promoting healthy regeneration of the landscape. Some fires were set
intentionally by Native Americans to create healthier environments for themselves; a form of traditional
knowledge still practiced in some places today.
Very good point Jeff. Manage the Forests or watch them burn on
their own. Logging business is down to just bout nothing these days.
Some fires are started by dry lightening. Very hot weather. Even a
little thing like a chain dragging on the paved road can start a fire.
But if the forests were managed like they used to be we wouldn’t be
choking on smoke, and many homes could have been saved. Imo
Prescribed fires still take place in Florida.... I have seen them afterwards and while smoldering
while visiting Honeymoon Island state park before. There were signs placed around it for the
public as well as for educational purposes and to warn to stay out of the prescribed fire area.
Green trees will survive and thrive after a fire, it's fascinating.
we have prescribed fires here throughout the wet months
in the winter in the wooded areas, and they're taking
down dead trees (pine beetle casualties) as quickly as
they can. Our community got a grant to do so. They're
having a hard time keeping up with it.
That pine beetle is a nasty bug.
We no longer plant pine on the property, only fir and
other species.
