for 10 years or so there have always been plenty of western blue jays around the yard...like 10-20....haven't seen one in months...weird...maybe something to do with the fires last year? dunno, but they are missed...

Blue jays are one of my favorite birds, so I watch them.

Don't know how it is by you, but they come and go here at our apartment complex in Eugene, OR too. We have many oak trees that produce acorns. With the acorns, come the Blue Jays. When the acorns are divvied up between the Blue Jays and squirrels and are depleted - bam! The Blue Jays fly off to better feeding grounds.

Has anything happened with the oak trees near you?

another thing that might be happening, there's way more hawks, raptors of all sorts all up and down the W. coast now so they might be hiding out from them?
I've been losing baby squirrels, birds to them far more this winter than others but we have way more birds this winter too.
Otherwise, since birds have very sensitive lungs, they may have perished in smoke from fires even though the fires themselves weren't close. Or maybe there's more feral/neighborhood cats there this winter?

try throwing out some whole peanuts (with shells), see if they show up. A friend of mine who lives in your area says they are there but usually don't show up in larger numbers in the winter.

However, it could be that forest fire smoke could have damaged their lungs, caused fewer numbers to survive.
Also, maybe they simply moved to more protected areas to hide from the storms, heavy winds, etc.?
