7 Million more Germans resolve to power Homes with Wind, Solar in 2021: 15% already Do
Many Germans are starting the new year with “climate resolutions” – around 24 percent of them want to make more use of environmentally-friendly means of transport, 13 percent want to switch to a vegetarian or vegan diet and 9 percent plan to switch to green electricity in 2021, a poll conducted by Civey among 5,000 people showed.
Applied to Germany’s entire population, this would mean that over seven million Germans were planning on switching to renewable electricity this year, the survey commissioned by renewable electricity provider LichtBlick found.
According to the poll, one out of eight young people (18-29 years) is considering a change of contract and people in the North of Germany, where a lot of wind power is generated, are more inclined to change contracts to a green provider than in the other regions.
According to Lichtblick, some 12.67 million Germans already bought green electricity in 2019.

Hi Akira,
Interesting, but does it mean anything?
I ask because a quick check found at article a year ago that said:
Demand for contracts of electricity from renewable energy in Germany peaked in 2012, a year after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, said Verivox. That year, 78 percent of all German electricity contracts concluded were green. Since then, interest in such contracts has been falling continuously, reaching its lowest point in 2018 with an average of 32 percent of all new electricity contracts. Now there is an upward trend again, according to Vogel, since “global warming, through Grete Thunberg, has moved more into the centre of the debate.”
So apparently the percentage of Germans paying for a contract for renewable energy goes up and down... but it doesn't seem to correlate with the amount of renewable energy production in Germany in any way.
Hey, I'm sure it will make those Germans paying more for electricity feel better... but it doesn't appear this will make any difference in Germany's greenhouse gas emissions.
Cheers
Jim
