She was famous for her meandering journey in search of a new pack or a mate.
The 3- or 4-year-old lone wolf, identified only has OR-54, was found dead Wednesday, the Sacramento Bee reported. She was famous among wildlife researchers for her meandering journey through the northern California, southern Oregon and northern Nevada wilderness in her search for a pack or a mate.
Alas, her journey ended alone, according to the Bee. Her body was found in Shasta County in northern California, and her cause of death is currently unknown. She came from a famous bloodline, as her father was the first known gray wolf to cross into California since the endangered species was eradicated in the state in the 1920s. Seven years after her father crossed in 2011, OR-54 meandered south of the Oregon-California border after leaving her pack in 2018.
Ranchers in northern California complained about the lone wolf for years, the Bee reported. But wildlife protectors fought for her, earning gray wolves protected status as an endangered species in California.

it's fascinating though, some animals are solitary creatures, -I feel this particular Wolf was an outcast , they usually travel in packs...
in Finland there's a thriving population of wolves, all across the nation, -and they are least afraid of humans, they literally show up at people's yards...
you cannot hunt them unless they are a danger to the population...
I think my favorite story was of an elder man sitting outside his sauna and he saw an animal approaching, he thought it was a dog, -mamma mia, it was a wolf...
the senior was the least afraid, he just raised his shovel lol...no need to kill any animal...
my mother used to tell a story as a child she was skiing to school on one side of a lake and there was a wolf running on the other side of the lake....
I'm a skier myself but that was too wild... also the Lynxes are common, these are the bigger version, there are various species of Lynxes, the ones in Finland are the bigger ones...
they are taller and much bigger...gorgeous beings...

so sad to think about her lone struggle to survive and find a mate. We have about 140+- wolves in Oregon, but the protection has been weakened by the Trump Adm. so ranchers will probably be allowed to shoot them if they even come close to threatening their livestock.
In my heart and soul, I hope there will be some sense of justice involved in the many species that the USDA targets for killing. Their APHIS program lists all the species killed in 2019, previous years as well. Can't find the link now but trust me, it will blow your mind the numbers of wildlife of all kinds that are killed, poisoned, trapped, etc., by this APHIS program. Previously I've posted the numbers of these kills. It boggles the mind. It's done mostly to protect ranchers and farmers.

OR-54's Father, OR7, passed by my house very close, if not literally though my backyard in 2012. I was not living here yet, I was in my last year at my last house.
OR7 also looks like it made a close pass by my last house, in 2013. That was a few months before moving out my last load of stuff, and not knowing where I was going to end up.
OR7 tracking map 2011-2013 at link
PS; this is the only tracking map I could find, nothing on any other gray wolves.

thanks for that map Jeff, I had no idea they travelled so far and wide. Looks like they headed south for the winter cold and went north in Spring. Interesting!
