I'm in West Hills and can see and smell the smoke from the new Topanga Canyon and Calabasas fires today. Yesterday there was a fire in Burbank. They're springing up all over. Must be people-caused as there is no lightening.

It's the latest "muzzie thing", they do arson attacks all over. People are slow as molasses to catch on. Been doing it in europe for some time now...

most of the time, it's simply stupid americans.

Arson can be accidental or on purpose.

We have weed clearning ordinances here--have to be
cleared out to 100 feet around homes.

You will see people out with mowers starting in
March---but by mid-late june, the grasses are drying
up pretty hard. While a mower is good on the green
grass of April and early May, that same mower can
actually start a fire if you are mowing down a field
of golden, dry grass on a hot June day. One spark
of the blades hitting a rock, or the hot underside
of the engine, is one of the most common causes of
human caused grass fires in So Calif.

When you hit June, stick to a weed whacker.

But, squirrels in lines, or hawks, cigarettes thrown
out of car windows, or even a car riding through
deep grass (again, those hot engine bottoms)--
accidents along roads often start grass fires,
sparks from rims of flat tires, and overheated
breaks start them around roads.

Toss in there camping activities, family barbeques
(not done safely as suggested) and lots and lots of
illegal fireworks and home spun bottle rockets...

kids with fireworks are considered "arson" as well
if it starts a fire.

and...there is the ever popular, mentally ill,
pyromanic who just plain likes to start fires (then
usually sticks around as part of the crowd to
watch).. or the insurance fraud fires (bank taking
my house, oh hell no... watch this--if I can't have
it, no one can)....
gonna be a long summer again. We got good rain this
year, but that brought extra grass.

What's amazing thinking about all of this is that...
we are still all here with houses.

We had the rains, but the water disappeared into the
soil in the downward direction and you can dig down
about four feet (that I know of) and there is no sign
of moisture; dry, dry, dry. I had about 40 inches of
water this past winter here in the Central Sierra
Nevada foothills (may average has always been around
20-25 inches), but it is going to take more rain to
start seeing the soil hold the water past the
beginning of summer. So far, the well at 480 feet is
doing well, but who knows what will happen?

yeah, I agree...smells like an arsonist to me. We're
getting smoke blown up here from those fires, too.
