"Oakland has some of the fastest-rising rents in the US, and activists have been increasingly concerned about gentrification and displacement caused by the technology boom in nearby San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
Long-time Oaklanders and tenants’ rights activists, however, said the tragedy was a symptom of a major affordability crisis and the long-term failure of urban housing policy to protect the most vulnerable people.
“If you can’t afford to buy a million-dollar home, then you can’t afford to live in this city unless you’re willing to risk your safety. And that’s unconscionable.”

around 1986 we sold our house on Wala Vista Ave. in Oakland for about $140,000. Now neighboring houses are selling for $1 million and more. That's why financially I almost have to stay in the Portland area. I lived in the Oakland area through most of the 1970's and then 7 years in San Jose. There was tangible fear after 6 o'clock in the evening in Oakland in the 1970's.

The Mayor of Oakland gave a speech at my nephew's grad. Getting his BS in law enforcement. She said that her city was now one of the safest places to live. I was born and raised there till I was 15-years old...it was not safe then and is now one of the top 5 most dangerous Cities to live in. This fire was a very bad disaster! Makes one wonder where her mind is at today. Sad. Kat
