The "heat signature" seems to be shrinking, however. "Acres burned" already is not quite the same as "acres on fire at the moment". They seem to be making progress on it. That doesn't mean it still can't be dangerous. It can, but it may mean that they are starting to get a little upper hand on it and starting to beat it back, slow it down.

Thats when the red flag warnings expire there tonight. Firefighters did a hell of a job holding the lines yesterday. Problem is the winds today are still ominously pointing to the populated communities of Victorville and Apple Valley. Its gonna be touch and go all day today.

The Summit Inn..gone. The Truck Scales..gone. The Chevron station at the junction of 138/I-15 ..gone. Numerous homes, especially in Phelan, gone. It will probably be a couple of days before a count. They're evacuation parts of Hesperia and over 84K people evacuated. That's 84,000 people from over 30,000 homes.
The one success story so far is Lytle Creek. Tankers and a favorable wind direction shift has turned the fire away from there, at least for now.
This fire remains very dangerous and unpredictable. It's been burning right through retardant lines all day and evening. The fire is moving so fast, they couldn't get enough fire fighters in front of it...and at least two have been taken to the hospital after 6 firefighters were trapped. They're okay tonight, their engine's pretty damaged.
Prayers going out to all in the path, and those who fight right in its path. We'll know more when the sun comes up in the morning.

Hi Redhart,
It's been interesting to note as our fires in great numbers have come and gone we're hearing much less about folks lingering. This is such good news as we're losing fewer and they're showing us when the need arises they can and do get out of harms way.

yeah, although they showed some guy at the Lytle creek RV park hosing down with a garden hose. He got lucky-- they held the fire off at the RV park (last I saw).
Fighting a monster wildfire with a garden hose: kinda stupid. Good way to end up in the Darwin awards.
And, I do undestand to some point. We all work to have all this "stuff"..house, clothes, belongings, and to be asked to walk away with out a fight goes against our natures in many ways. But..sometimes, that's exactly what you have to do or you lose more than all.. yourself or your family.
The fact if, if your house can be saved... it will have it's best chance without you there, letting professionals with all the right equipment handle that. If it can't be saved, what point is there in going down with the ship. Live to get a new ship. No one wants to have to do that, but better than dying.
And, of course, I'm not talking about a little garbage can fire or tiny fire. Hubby and I once put out a chicken coop fire with a garden hose (@ the neighbor's house waiting for the fire department to arrive). But, when you are staring at one of these monster fires..and yeah, they roar like a monster and will eat you like a monster, then that's a whole different animal. There is NO HOPE you are going to save your home against 100 foot flames and energy and heat that can spontaneously combust your home before it even reaches it. When you see that... run. now. don't wait. pack as much stuff (if you can), but if you can't... just get in the car and drive with as many living things with you as possible.

Hi Redhart,
In today's world which is so materialistic there's a lot of psychology in the process while trying under duress to ascertain if one should stay or go. We also like to be in control of what's ours vs leaving it to someone we don't know, or don't know if they'll be there to put ones own fire vs a house across the street. Yet for the uninsured it adds another layer in decision making as well.
All in all it seems like our fire season has topped anything several earthquakes would have taken and it would be nice to think it's coming to an end but that's not likely.

Officials are down sizing this fire (but, it's still huge), to about half the acreage it was. The new revised figure is: 25,626 acres and 4% containment tonight.
I have not yet found a reason for the large discrepancies in acreage, but this figure sounds more realistic.
The Cedar fire is at 600 acres 0% containment. That's the one in Kern county, ca.. west of Sequioya Nat. Forest.
