This one is bad. It started earlier today around hwy 14 and has been roaring. There are reports that there are some santa ana type winds blowing very strongly and still hot.
At the link is "Periscope" which is someone shooting live to the web of this fire. What you are seeing is the fire cresting the ridge from Santa Clarita and heading toward the San Fernando Valley area.

The 3300 acre number came last night, and this fire has been burning as if it's daytime all night long
Last word was the fire was encroaching on "Little Tujunga" area and Kagel Canyon area. there's a report of some structures being lost in Tujunga near the Dillon Divide.
over on Wildland fire, one post said "There's no closed line, everything we tried failed."
If you live in this area, you best pay attention. This is a dangerous, out of control fire approaching a very populated area. Links to info pages are on my first post in this thread.

They've found a body near the Sand Canyon area of the fire. No names or details, only that he was male.
This fire's turned deadly now.

The fire's shifted...blowing east and north and threatening Santa Clarita through Acton along the hwy 14 corridor.
We seeing smoke up here for the first time. new evacuations are being called for left and right and the fire fighters are scrambling against the erratic winds.
More houses went up, but I dont' have details.
I dont' have new fire numbers, but one fire capt said it probably has doubled again in size.
Another chief said that Action is seriously threatened, and this fire, the worst he's seen in 33 yrs, has the potential to go all the way to Palmdale if the winds stay like this.

pre KTLA @ 6am, 3,000 firefighters on line of this fire. More heat and strong winds expected today.
10,000 homes currently under evacuations.
a couple estimates...one from inciweb states fire still at 33,000 acres..but another, from a fire related site, said that infrared imagine puts it at over 35,000 acres this morning... still 10% containment
They've got the DC-10 hitting this fire.
..have to go to work, stay safe and hoping to hear from BJ soon. If anyone has his email, would be nice if you could get him to check in.

per wildlandfire.com (from fire officials): 37,473 acres with 25% containment.
evacuees from the "middle" of the fire area were allowed back in. Evacuations from west and south flanks were still in place last night.
despite the increase in acreage overnight, it sounds like nature cooperated a little, and they made some progress.
They try to get those containment lines around the population areas (the north-center) of the fire first, secure it..push the fire back into the wildlands where it's not threatening population centers anymore, then close in the lines.
There's still a lot of work to do, and this fire has suprised firefighters already...so while the east and west fronts are still going, they have to continue to hit it with all they have. The winds up there are erratic, and while they calmed over night, could zip up to 40-50mph gusts in minutes and the fire would be taking off again.
They did a huge amount of backfiring yesterday to create no-fuel zones around neighborhoods , important structures (power lines), etc. A lot of the smoke people saw yesterday were from the backfires set.
If they can get another good day of calm winds, they might just tame this beast and allow residents to start the healing process, get back to some sort of a normal life, etc.
I think we can already see this is going to be one of those "bad" fire season years. We got rain, finally, over the winter out here, but that brought the fuel. what we're seeing is very tall grass growth that catches very quickly, moves very fast. Grass fires aren't all that hot as a rule, but they travel fast... they send the fire into trees and neighborhoods quicker than a timber forest fire can...then catch the larger, bigger fuels.
Sorry for all the posts, but on these large fires, I'm hoping it helps people who might be or know people who live in these areas affected. Please add info if you get it and have access to new info.
Speaking of which...anyone know anything about BJ? he lives down where this fire has been burning and I haven't seen him on the board. Not sure if that's because of this fire, or some other reason (bopp ban him again?). Hoping he and his wife are safe, and he's just on vacation or something.

This is one nasty fire Reds. Even here in Northridge, the sky southeast is actually pitch black with dark brown edges. I had to turn the light on inside just now.
All looks horribly ominous. So glad it is nowhere near you!

heh, not this time...how are you doing? You may have to invest in some dust masks.
Then again, if that plume starts blowing this way, we may have to, too.
