We all await Han to return and save us this morning.Over the scanner, he sounds like he's a rebel leader making runs on the death star.
Okay, first news after overnight, not as good as I had hoped.
The fire's grown another 400 acres, and as of this morning, is 1600 acres. They have it at 0% containment.
Here's what one FF said over on wildlandfire.com:
"1600 acres, bottom along hwy 223 and flanks fairly secure, top (east) mostly unsecured, very steep and heavier fuels. Saw helicopter working around 2200, believe it was Kern 407, LAC has a helicopter on the fire, not sure if they were doing night ops. Significant threat remains to structures above the fire."
The Bear Valley Springs houses are at the top.
They seemed most concerned last night it might make a flanking run around the north side of the mountain, putting the community of Hart Flat in the line of fire next. They were working on a plan B contingency plan for evacuations there if they need it.
The north and east flanks of the fire are what they expect to give them the most trouble as the day wears on.
No houses have been lost yet (but, per scanner, it's been close a couple times).
All evacuations remain in effect, but I don't believe any more have been added overnight.
More engines from San Diego and elsewhere arriving to add to the "rebel army".
Help us Obi Wan.

terrible fire Redhart, sure hope they get some control soon. I did see pics of the DC10 in operation on one of the local news facebook page. Grown to 1800+ acres so far. Link has some good links within the discussion there. I'll be following it and do please update us so we know you are out of harm's way. Prayers for y'all!

Thanks...I just got home from work in town. No word since earlier this morning on how they're doing.
On one hand, we aren't seeing very much smoke, but that could be because it's blowing out into the valley instead of toward us.
On the other hand, the only posts I've seen have concerned calling in more units and aircraft...they release them if they're doing good, they call more in if they're not.
No new evacs since this morning.
No phone alerts since this morning...we got a communitiy phone message just before leaving for work telling us all precautionary evacuation areas were now mandatory today (we're not in an evac area at this time).
So, I have the scanner up and listening to the FFs..that's probably the best I can do right now until someone has a press release or news conference.
I'll certainly update when that happens.

Okay, we got one of those automated phone calls from the police department with some news.
They said while significant progress was made on the fire today, all mandatory evacuations already in effect, remain in effect. The good news is that no new evacuations will be issued at this time.
The new acreage/containment figures posted are 1,800 acres (no change from about 10am this morning) and 20% containment (that's great, it was 0% this morning).
So, that's the latest news from the fire front.
Meanwhile, our house seems to be right between a lake they're using to refill helicopters and the fire. So, it's sort of like being on a helicopter freeway...back and forth they go, sometimes two or three at a time in line. The craziest one was a huge yellow helicopter that looks like the Beatle's Yellow Submarine. I think that's oen of the two CalFire special helicopters they sent.
If I get any more significant news, I will relay it. Red... Burnt out on fires

7:18pm: email notification from Police: "Code Red update from Bear Valley Police Department. Although significant progress has been made on the fire, the existing evacuations will remain in effect until further notice. No additional evacuations are planned at this time. Please do not call the Police Department regarding this message." (I also got the same text message on my phone)
7:30pm: (twitter)Kern County Fire @kerncountyfire The #DeerFire is holding at 1800 acres and is now at 20% containment. 826 firefighters are working to reinforce.
8pm..scanner chatter: aircraft returning to roosts after a days work, signing off one by one. There's at least one night-helicopter that is coming on (maybe more than one) that are specially equipped for fighting fires at night. We basically are doing a lot of sign offs of day crews, and sign ons of night crews.
8:15pm: new fire map based on fire @12:30pm, 7/2/16. Yeah, I measured it out, our house is 4 mi from closest front of fire. http://kerncountyfire.org/images/deer_hi_res.jpg
8:30pm: CalFire Incident update sheet is up as of 7pm... acreage:1,800 acres Containment: 20% Expected containment: unknown Injuries: 2 (I heard one on the scanner, a fire fighter with an abdominal injury was taken to Kern Medical Hospital last night) Structures Threatened: 300 Structures Destroyed: none (yay!) Structures Damaged: none Engines: 126 Water tenders: 3 Helicopters: 12 Air Tankers: 5 Hand crew: 7 Dozers: 5 Total Personnel: 826 Current situation: Cal Fire Incident management team #1 assumed command of the Incident today at 11:00am. Firefighters continue to construct containment lines while strengthening and securing control lines. High temperatures and low humidity will continue for the next few days. Access to fire is very challenging, but firefighters are actively battling the fire from the air and on the ground.
Residents need to be prepared for this fire season. The prolonged drought has caused epidemic levels of Bark Beetles that have increased tree mortality to over 66 million dead trees.
Evacuations: ?Recommended Evacuations for Bear Valley springs residents to the north and west of the intersection of Deer Trail Drives and Starland Trail. Precautionary evacuations: Residents in teh community of Hart Flat are advised to prepare for evacuation.
Evacuation center: Jacobsen Middle School 711 Anita Dr, Tehachapi

7am calfire report is out... right now, no changes in evacuation status, but it looks like they made good headway on the fire overnight. It's up to 40% contained. If the weather holds, and nothing weird happens, this fire should be on it's way out and going into mop-up.
I feel they'll lift the evacs soon, but they always want to make sure no hazards are left in neighborhoods and utilities restored before doing so, even if the flames are gone.
I'm going to call this fire headed for bed ...and will discontinue updates unless something happens that warrants more.
Sorry about the board bogie, but appreciate the emergency info space.

We spent a good part of the day saying "Thank You"...these heroes above (Thank you, but we're just doing our jobs) were one group that came into the store from Temeculah. I have more photos with a CalFire group from near Sacramento, firefighters from LA, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, etc., etc., etc.,
Now, I did ask about Han Solo lol. I told them he needs to come into the store, he's got a fan club.
we actually have over a thousand fire fighters in Tehachapi to fight (and mop) up after this thing. It's increased by 200 FF since yesterday, and the fire's in clean up mode.
50% containment, but they said they'd be at the fire turning over every log and putting out every ember for several more days to make sure it's dead.
We put up a big "Thank you Firefighters" sign in the front of the store for both employees and customers to sign and put a small message on. We also have a basket of snacks, free drinks and such for fire fighters to take whenever they're in the store.
I told them myself, we'd be toast if not for you guys..thank you, thank you, thank you. You guys are the best.
nearly 2K acres, NO homes lost or damaged. 3 firefighter injuries to do this.

great news again Redhart! For some reason, I can't view the photos and when I click on the square where the photo belongs, I get "about blank"! Well it's so good to know that you are all safe and that fire is going to be history soon. :)

More good news, increased containment. Fire personal is still listed as over 1,000. Some planes have been released, all evacs still lifted (as of 6pm last night).
Met an helicopter pilot at work today, and the lady who works for CalFire doing all their shopping for them. She was very nice. We're taking photos of all the fire fighters from all over who come into the store. Everyone's a little on edge tonight with the fourth of July celebrations (legal and illegal ones...dumb humans shooting illegal works off all over and keeping the police and fire people running around).
Let's all say a prayer for a safe event tonight.
