It's a bad fire year here, with the rains, the grass grew very tall and is now drying out. We nearly had to evacuate yesterday when a fire about a half mile away went from 2 acres to 44 acres very quickly and was heading our way. Kern county fire fighters called in everything they had and held it at a small ridge just to our west. Our truck was loaded, but we were glad to unload when they got it stopped.
Now there is another fire to our north, south of Lake Isabella, and they aren't having as good of luck. In the community of Squirrel Valley, they're saying possibly 40-50 homes have burnt now. It jumped their lines, and while they were doing structure protection, ended up having to run to save themselves, losing them homes.
Kern County Hospital in Lake Isabella is being evacuated and the fire rages toward the larger community. Hwy 178 is closed between Sierra hwy and 155.
(I'm reading updates and adding....) The community of Onyx is being evacuated.
6:10pm: 1500 structures threatened. Fire has moved nearly 6 miles in two hours.
6:16pm: Jump highway 178 and houses involved on other side of highway.
6:36pm: Estimating 60 structures lost. 2-3,000 acres with wind-driven rapid rate of spread.
Structure group reporting "a lot of life threat" in South Lake, shifting engines that way.
7:53pm: Multiple houses involved
I believe prayers are in order right now.
updates are from www.wildlandfire.com (at link).

Wildfire near Lake Isabella grows to estimated 2,500 acres; homes lost BY CHRISTINE L. PETERSON cpeterson@bakersfield.com THURSDAY, JUN 23, 2016 8:06 PM — updated 2 minutes ago
A fire burning Thursday evening south of Highway 178 in the Lake Isabella area had consumed an estimated 2,000 acres by 7:45 p.m., and was zero percent contained, fire officials reported. The cause of the wildfire isn't known.
Fire officials reported "approximately 50-60 structures have been lost" in the Erskine Fire via their InciWeb incident information system. Later, on its Facebook page, the Kern County Fire Department described the structures as "homes."
Road closures were reported for Highway 178, Highway 155 and Sierra Way. The InciWeb system reported evacuations are in effect for South Fork, Weldon, Onyx, Lakeland Estates, Mountain Mesa, South Lake, Squirrel Valley and Yankee Canyon.
As of about 8:30 p.m., the fire was moving toward Onyx.
A Type 1 incident fire team has been ordered, said Wendy Russ, an administrative specialist for the US Forest Service.
An estimated 275 personnel have been called to fight the fire.
Power is out in the Lake Isabella area and AT&T cellular service is not working, KCFD said on its Facebook page. Power lines were also reported to be down, Russ said.
The fire began at about 4 p.m. south of Highway 178 and north of Erskine Creek Road.
Both the Bureau of Land Management and the Kern County Fire Department are incident commanders, the InciWeb site reported.
Evacuation centers have been set up at Kern Valley High School and Lake Isabella Senior Center. The hospital has been evacuated to South Fork school.
A Red Cross news release said that if evacuation orders continue overnight, the shelter at the senior center will become a full shelter operation.
“Right now our volunteers are making sure that these families have an immediate, safe place to go,” Red Cross Executive Director Barry Falke said in the news release. “But our disaster teams are ready to provide lodging, hot meals, water, hygiene items, health services, and comfort for anyone impacted by this fire.”
Californian photographer Casey Christie contributed to this report.

4:28 (CalifDisasterGroup): This fire has killed two local residents who were overrun during the initial attack or extended attack phase of the fire. The fire is now running again this afternoon and forcing the evacuation of Kern Valley Hospital and is burning into the Weldon area (but no immediate threat to the town of Weldon, proper, Kern fire adds) and has jumped Kelso Valley Road both up by Weldon as well as has burned out all the way towards Kelso Valley itself. More structures have been lost this afternoon including in the Kelso Valley area.

6pm press conference is finishing up... the 2 dead were elderly residents of the home in which they were found laying together.
Evacuation information was given out.
They will start going into already burned areas tomorrow with cadaver dogs.
They are still fighting, over 800 firefighter all over, this fire is the priority fire right now in california.

Air operations confirmed the IR map accuracy at 0700.
The control objectives for the East side of the incident is to keep the fire West of South kelso Valley road. This places a primary priority on containing the 300 acre slop-over located at Rocky Point.
Second priority is Division Hotel at the South East corner of the incident. The objective is to anchor and push line West toward Erskine Canyon.
As of 0600, the fire was reported backing-down into Bright Star Canyon.
The ARGIS map in topography mode (layers) shows how difficult the terrain is on this incident.
1:19pm: latest inciweb update now posted with maps/details of fire: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4806/ outlook: Projected Incident Activity Because of successful fire suppression efforts, the north and west portions of the fire are expected to exhibit minimal growth. There is significant potential for fire spread on the eastern flank when wind and slope are in alignment. The southern portion of the fire is very steep and rugged, making reconnaissance and fire suppression extremely difficult.

43,460 acres and containment up to 40%.
That's the latest on the fire today. The fire's around Piute peak, which is more remote, far less populated, but also rough country and difficult to fight in, but they are making progress.

it's still a good 20 mi north, and they are slowly getting the fire contained (40% as of 11:30am this morning). It's still going to take a huge effort and army of FFs to bring the beast into full control, but it's now cowering in the wilderness swiping at the planes.
Prayers going out to all those who are devasted by the fire. For them, it's not soon enough.

Last update.... this fire's basically in mop up now (although it may be several more days before that's completed)
*note, the third body found in a burned out house turned out to be an animal, not a human. So, death toll back down to 2 people.

P.S. ...the prayers aren't for me! they're for the communities north of us...sort of a sister mountain town to Tehachapi. We're good and miles away from the fire mentioned that's blowing away from our town. Just wanted to make that clear (our prayers were yesterday).
