GAVIOTA, Calif. (KABC) --

A fast-moving brush fire that broke out in Santa
Barbara County has grown to 1,100 acres Thursday,
threatening nearby structures, closing a portion of the
101 Freeway and prompting evacuations.

The blaze broke out around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near the
top of Refugio Road. Evacuation orders were issued for
Refugio Canyon, Venadito Canyon and Las Flores Canyon
and by Thursday morning, more orders were issued for El
Capitan Canyon, El Capitan Ranch and El Capitan and
Refugio state beaches.

Dubbed the Sherpa Fire, the blaze quickly spread with
the help of strong winds in the area. Firefighters, who
are dealing with a steep and rugged terrain, have not
contained any portion of the fire as of Thursday
morning.

It is burning about a quarter-mile away from the 101
Freeway and shut it down on the northbound side at
Winchester Canyon Road and southbound by the city of
Buellton to Goleta.

The American Red Cross has set up shelters at two
locations: one at Wake Center, 300 N. Turnpike Road,
and the other at Santa Ynez Valley High School, 2975 E.
Highway 246. Owners should coordinate with the Red
Cross to get shelter for small animals. For larger
animals, people may call Susan Klein-Rothschild at
(805) 896-1057 or take them to the Earl Warren
Showgrounds.

Fire more than doubles to 4,000 acres overnight

A wildfire in Santa Barbara County that’s threatening
homes and closing major highways more than doubled in
size overnight to 4,000 acres, federal officials said
early Friday.

Chewing threw vegetation that hasn’t burned since the
1950s and pushed by 40 mph winds, the Sherpa fire
crawled toward Highway 101 between El Capitan State
Beach and Gaviota, forcing the California Highway
Patrol to shut down the coastal route overnight.

The blaze was 5% contained, officials with the Los
Padres National Forest tweeted.

On Thursday night, authorities said the fire had burned
1,700 acres and forced the CHP to again close the
freeway between Winchester Canyon Road and Highway 246
in Buellton. The road reopened around 5 a.m. ...(more
