I don't understand how in some of the residential areas where
the houses are GONE and the cars are burnt and black, how
can some of those small trees be standing? They should be GONE too,
shouldn't they?

fires like this are strange... I worked on forest fires one year when I was younger... good money, challenging and it filled my adventurous outdoors spirit.

you can find entire blackout areas with patches here and there that are seemingly untouched.

has to do with winds, many winds within the fire are caused by the flames and heat, vortexes as a result of those winds, etc. etc. etc.

in addition, very healthy trees have a better chance of survival (you may see some recover over time from being charred) and my guess is that the young trees are healthier for one reason or another.

no rhyme or reason - one fire I worked jumped over 25 miles on the winds... others changed course and we had to run on foot and vehicles due to the speed with which it was heading towards us and ended up wiping out our camp.

no telling what the loss of wildlife is with this, however you can bet it is huge.

I wondered about it immediately especially since all the chem sprays going on there. I think similar happened in the PNW last year- intentional burn-out. thats my thoughts.
