Was looking at one of those photos. I couldn't see any
point where it came up from the ground. From the picture
of the bottom of the building it looks like it was just
sitting on top of the ground, with no buried support....

in china if they found out who did that, they would be shot real fast.....omg!....thanks for the link, it has lots of pictures and was looking for an update...prayers going out to all those dear people...wonder if they have those dogs that find people....

Subject: Chile earthquakes were really damaging


a decade ago when they found so many contractors had cut corners even though new buildings had strong earthquake construction rules. Human nature!

Same will happen here -- after the 89 earthquake a lot of buildings didn't make proper repairs, and it was just a matter of luck that many built right after the 1908 earthquake didn't fall down but were destabilized enough that the next one will be bad.

I saw a presentation where they noted that there was a huge rush to rebuild SF after 1908, and most of the city was rebuilt before any new codes could be set for better earthquake resistance.
