Poor construction likely a factor in extent of late-December tornado damage in Dallas area, expert says

***
In determining whether the damage is from poor construction or the tornado itself, Haag Engineering Co. Structural Engineer and Meteorologist Tim Marshall looks at three factors: anchors, braces and connections.
"There are three critical areas for connections: wall to foundation, wall to wall and roof to wall"

"The [Dallas area] tornado exploited poor connections by tearing away roofs and toppling walls"

"We found 'cut nails' used around the perimeter of the house to secure the wall bottom plate to the foundation. Still, more homes were attached by shot pins. Some homes [were] anchored with bolts [that] did not have nuts or washers to secure the wall," Marshall said.

Subject: Texas is the state that won't regulate anything.

I decided not to move there, ever, when a friend of mine that bought a huge house with lots of square footage for the same price they sold their 2 bedroom 1920's cottage for told us that their weed wacker ate huge cuts into the Styrofoam type material the outside walls were made from while they were trimming up the yard.
Likewise, they allow explosives to be stored near residential areas, with deadly results.
Unregulated societies need wise, thoughtful, intelligent, non-greedy honest people to participate, or eventually they will literally blow up or blow away.
