Riding down Market Street on the trolley...I understand that this video was taken to show New Yorkers what a thriving metropolis San Francisco had become.

not clear, but one can certainly get a feeling of the destruction and magnitude of it...my goodness!!!I had grandparents who were there and I think there is written accounts in the museum or something there...
thanks for posting, I was totally fascinated, it was like a time machine. It made me laugh at all the people trying to cross the streets and the cars and horses, kids trying to get their faces into the film, seeing the street sweepers cleaning up horse poop...wild!.... then of course I saw the afterwards film and had to watch it too...

I've never seen this video, thank you! It's funny how tall the Ferry Building Tower and the Spreckels' Building Dome look, don't they? Much of old SF looks like new SF, the charm enclosed in a space that resists expansion.
I've had a couple of dreams about living in SF in the old days, carriages on the street, the whole deal. When I repeated the dreams to my mother at the time, she said, 'you were there'. When I see these pics I know I was there..yeah! LOL, I didn't leave my heart in San Francisco, it's still there- :D

This is San Francisco, they believe just 4 days before the quake. This film, was originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing, to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he knows who owned them and when the plates were issued).. It was filmed only four days before the quake and shipped by train to NY for processing. Amazing but true!
