Subject: Historical Disasters: Laki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laki

Laki is a still active Icelandic volcanic site that blew from 1783-1784. The
fumes and ash spread all over Europe and killed livestock and people
throughout.

It's speculated by some that the famines it caused throughout Europe may
have been one (of several) factors feeding into the French Revolution.

It affected the climate globally, that winter was the coldest on record for
North America, and it may have been what triggered droughts in the
monsoon areas of India at that time.

and problems with wheat harvests and sped up the introduction of the humble potato into Europe. Those countries that adopted potatoes (Ireland, Poland, Russia, and north) did well. Those that didn't accept the potato (because it was less digestible and caused gas) like France, ended up with very hungry populations.
