A large tornado touched down outside Washington, Ill., east of Peoria on Sunday, the National Weather Service said, part of a dangerous line of fast-moving storms that ripped through the midwest.
At least 10 states were in the storm's path, as tornado watches were posted in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas. A tornado watch was in effect for northern Illinois until 4 p.m., the weather service said. In northern Indiana, the watch is in effect until 8 p.m.
"We obviously have a very dangerous situation on our hands and it's just getting started," NWS deputy director Laura Furgione said on a conference call earlier Sunday.
The Chicago Bears' home game against the Baltimore Ravens was temporarily halted due to severe weather in the Chicago area, and fans were evacuated from the stands at Soldier Field.
There was no immediate word on deaths or injuries resulting from the confirmed tornado, but images posted on Twitter and Facebook appeared to show tremendous devastation, with dozens of homes leveled and cars flipped.
Alexandra Sutter, a reporter for Central Illinois' WMBD-TV, called the damage "horrific."
