evidently the cooler temps have helped putting out the fires though it's still not fully contained.....

I've sent my energies to all the areas affected....

from the looks of the map at the link, if you zoom into the Tuolumne Grove of Sequoias, it appears that a large portion of the grove is within the boundary where the fire went or is still going through. There's no word on that yet and in fact the silence is kind of deafening! Some talk of this on twitter feeds as others begin to take note of the various maps of the areas burned.

I pray that's not true but other maps with captions show the same thing. Rain would be a savior right now so let's envision this storm to bring lots of rain and finally put that fire out.

I grew up in the big city of Los Angeles, could hardly wait to get out of there, though I still miss the old beaches I used to frequent. In those days they weren't so crowded.
We moved to N. Ca. to 6 acres with a creek, many farm animals, etc. I've planted nearly 1000 tree seedlings, mostly by our cabin in Mariposa. The Forest service used to give them away by the thousands back then. I don't know if they are still there or destroyed by fire. They had a bad one several years ago right in that area.

I also planted a giant Sequoia some 30 years ago, in a town in Oregon where we used to live and hope one day to visit, see if it's still there. Trees are our breath and speak to our souls!
I still rescue tree seedlings of many kinds, grow them and give them away to folks who I hope take care of them.

You were so blessed to grow up in nature marja!! :)

what sort of idiot would start an illegal fire on a hot day in August? Apparently the deer season for bow hunters starts early but why this year, the driest year in California in many years.

Seems to me the Forest service should review their dates, not start any hunting of any sort until it's safe to do so like after a few good rains.

Most of California's biggest fire including the Cedar fire in 2003 (largest in history) were mostly caused by lost hunters, etc.

Well crikey, it's all history now but what a massive loss for us all. I keep hearing that the giant Sequoias are safe, I want proof!

sheila, -I agree re the giant sequoias...
I've been camping out in the wilderness not realizing the hunting season has started,

all of the yahoos with their camouflage jeeps and camouflage clothing show up, -run bambi run....

out in the wild it's easy to see all the illegal fire rings built , these guys get all loaded with brewsky and that's when these disasters happen...

the grossest thing out there is that they usually dump all their cans and bottles into those fireplaces and just leave it all there to pollute the nature, grrrrrrrrrrrr.....

oh yeah, we've cleaned up after these creeps many times in the wilderness and trust me, I have respect for those who really need to feed their family, I've known some of these sort of hunters who abide by the law and never waste any part of what they kill. But those Mucho macho Rambo hunters who get drunk and sometimes shoot each other by mistake (c'est domage!) are a group I despise.

In 1984 in E. Oregon, I was part of an archaeology dig by the Deschutes river in September. We had to wear red or orange so we wouldn't get shot and at that, during the dig several times we heard bullets overhead, and ducked in the pits for cover!

In that dig, we discovered "pre Mazama" artifacts which means that it was older than 8,000 years old.

Mt Mazama, now Crater lake exploded back then, and being 40 times bigger than Mt. St. Helens, deposited a readily identifiable layer of ash in any dig in western states. So I guess it was all worth dodging those bullets and what fun it was to be out there in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of good looking guys digging with us! ;)

that sounds so cool, -I've found amazing things while hiking in some remote mountain backcountry, one is an antique brass cigarette holder....

I wonder how old it is.....
and those yahoo hunters who shoot each other , -it's almost karmic....ouch....

Subject: Great News! 70% Containment as of Sept. 2...!

URL: wwwMyMotherlode.com News Update

(There's also an updated map at
www.inciweb.org/incident/3660/ )

Tuolumne County, CA -- The Rim Fire has now burned
235,841 acres or 368 square miles and is 70% contained.
The number of firefighters on scene has fallen to
4,330. The total cost to combat the flames has jumped
to $72 million.

Ponderosa Hills and the south side of Highway 108 from
North Tuolumne Road up to Pinecrest remain under an
advisory evacuation. Highway 120 at the Yosemite
National Park boundary west to Buck Meadows has been
evacuated.

Here is the latest on the Rim Fire directly from
Incident Command:

Very active fire behavior was observed today on the
south and east fire perimeters. Types of fire seen
today included running ground fire, group tree
torching, short crown runs, and spotting. In the north
and west fire perimeter moderate rates of spread were
observed both in advancing ground fire, and burnout
operations. Good progress was made with burnout
operations in the north and southeast sections.
Reliance on aviation resources has been critical in an
effort to slow the fires progress to allow suppression
resources to establish control lines in areas where
accessibility and safety can be achieved. The extremely
dry fuels, high winds, and potential for long-range
spotting remain a significant concern for the fire to
advance beyond control lines.

Incident Command estimates it will have conatainment on
the Rim Fire by Sunday, September 20th.
