Apparently, the fire closest to my location, was due to backburning today. Possibly, in case the winds shift, to reduce the fuel.

Thanks Redhart.
As of 9:30 AM, today:
16,000 acres - 25% contained
539 structures threatened
27 destroyed (26 residences, 1 commercial), 2 damaged.
6 injuries (5 firefighters, 1 civilian)
Overnight the fire continued to burn actively. Fanned by gusty winds out of the west, the fire moved east into the Snow Creek Drainage. A damage inspection team will continue working to determine the exact number and type of structures damaged or destroyed by the fire. On August 7, 2013 during initial attack on the Silver Fire a CAL FIRE dozer experienced problems that led to damage of the dozer from an internal fire. The operator was not injured.

It was fast, Mark. This was visible from my house, and the fires tend to appear close than they are, in this terrain. 10,000 + ac ... winds are picking up, and expected to get strong this afternoon.
It was one of those light fluffing dancing breezes, that feel so wonderful and magical. Then I walked around the side house to see the fire going strong over a large area. Still going...

thanks Susanna, I had lost the wildlands fire hotlist when my computer went down last year. We've got plenty of fires here in Oregon. It's been one of the driest Julys in ages! Sounds like your fire is growing and very dangerous. Keep us posted.

the west side of this fire had a flare up this morning. It's closer to where I am. The firefighters are amazing, as always.
The fire is over 10,000 ac now and burning in Cabazon to the east. Watched the flames, last night, on the western flank of the fire.
We're not getting the smoke here, since the winds are blowing to the east. Palm Springs looks like they are in fog, at least on the news pics I saw.
More evacuations. Will post the official info to update.
We're safe here, unless the winds shifted, drastically. So many have lost homes and structures, the wildlife and trees and brush ... :(
Read about the fires in Oregon too, Sheila. Rain would be more than welcomed.

it rained a lot today thankfully and hope it put out many fires. This is the 1st rain here in way over a month. I am hoping the same rain/thunderstorm brought rain to So. Oregon where the biggest fires are. And so hope your fires in Ca. will be contained. So sad to see such a terrible season there!

Silver fire: Homes burning, 5,000 acres lost, no containment
(Video available at link at bottom of this page) By Jason Wells and Shelby Grad August 7, 2013
A fast-moving brush fire south of Banning has burned more than 5,000 acres, injured one firefighter and destroyed numerous homes and structures.
CalFire reported “multiple structures involved” in the hamlet of Twin Pines. TV footage showed additional homes on fire in nearby Poppet Flats.
Firefighters were dealing with strong westerly winds that are expected to continue until sunset.
The fire was jumping through the rocky desert hillside, overtaking remote homes and other structures that dot the landscape.
There was no estimate on the number of structures destroyed, in part because the fire was spread out over a large area.
Officials did not disclose the injuries the firefighter suffered. But KTLA News said he suffered burns and was airlifted to a hospital.
The Silver fire forced the closure of Highway 243. Poppet Flats, Twin Pines and Silent Valley were under mandatory evacuation orders within the last hour. The fire was 0% contained.
CalFire spokesman Daniel Berlant said incident commanders had a “significant number of fire engines that are assigned to structure defense.”
The fire was reported shortly after 2 p.m. and had consumed 300 acres by 4 p.m. An evacuation center has been opened at Hemet High School, 41701 E Stetson Ave., in Hemet.
Nearly 500 firefighters were battling the blaze, as were four air tankers, five helicopters and two bulldozers, according to a CalFire spokesman.
