Subject: The dark on L.I. Streets

Yesterday, I had quite an experience. Small, safe but SIGNIFICANT. Just a taste of what could be ...

I was walking back from where I went to a computer around 6:00pm and it was dark already. I walked about a block and made a turn and up that block it was REALLY DARK. And of course, I remembered that there were 3 light poles down on that part, 2 on one side of the street and 1 on the other side.

As I walked that block and a half in that dark ... IT WAS EERIE! I felt at that moment how it must feel to be in those neighborhoods with no light. IT IS SCARY!

Now, I was in a familiar area, a safe area, with only 2 blocks of darkness per say 1.5 block n/s and 1 block on each side e/w ... AND YET it felt like this intense, gross darkness that if, GOD FORBID, more parts end up without light, women SHOULD NOT be out.

And then it hit me ... something I had warned my friends either earlier this year or sometime last year ... something that came to me that was so weird and that I didn't know why or how it was going to happen but I was given it:

What I had seen was that 'soon it would be dangerous for women to be out on the streets after dark.'

And now with these storms, these freaking economic problems that have gotten much worst in the past 6 months, this could happen.

In that type of darkness, if it were to happen, I would be afraid of being out here this town cs it would be about 15 blocks to where I'm staying from the train station. To walk something that long in this darkness WOAH! Even worst, let's say that we walk with a flashlight, the light will show if it's one person, a few people and annouce the walker to others whose motives may not be so good.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT I TRULY SAW HOW DANGEROUS THIS WHOLE SITUATION COULD BECOME! There are neighborhoods that are already suffering crime due to Sandy, but sometimes we think it's due to the destruction and people are desperate etc......BUT ALL THAT HAS TO HAPPEN IS FOR THE LIGHTS TO GO OUT ... IN ANY NEIGHBORHOOD!

SCARY GUYS! NOT joking nor exagerating.

This was something that I never thought about even though I went thru the black out a few years ago. I do have a flashlight with 40K hours of light and I'm far from using it up so far.

A GOOD THING TO HAVE: I saw this commercial on a lamp with 100K hours of light. GET IT! It's a good thing to have and I don't think it's that expensive. There are TV commercials for it late at night.

Small things that we never think of cs we take it all for granted all the time ... Safety is becoming a serious issue in many parts here.

Your best companion (besides a trusty firearm) may actually be a hand-crank / solar-powered radio flashlight combo. You're right, these periods without power are likely to be a more common occurrance - fewer resources to bring lights back on. I'm telling people about the KAITO Voyager Radios. They get GREAT ratings. Rugged and small, too for backpacks. Best of luck to you all.

Living in a rural area I have a different perspective and have developed a resentment of those that clamor for those big halogen street lights. I consider them to be pollution, nearly as bad as exhaust, smoke and other chemical pollutants we're spewing. You'd be surprised at how bright the night sky really is once you get far away from the big lights. Our eyes get used to the artificial lights and take time to adjust to the dark.

I've felt "guilt" over wishing the power would go out
even BRIEFLY just so I could go out for a walk at night
and truly enjoy the night sky without all the darn city
lights.

Artificial light really does mess with our eyes. I've
lost a LOT of my visual acuity just viewing this computer
monitor!

The "progress" of man has done such a negative number
on us that one has to wonder just how bad it really is.

I can't tell you how many times I've asked for a winter
trip to some place where we could enjoy the holiday
season where we could go out for a horse-drawn
sleigh ride in the snow-covered (and UNlit) countryside.

Never got that gift - sigh.

I live in San Francisco, obviously a cosmopolitan city yet just about a twenty minute drive across the
GG Bridge there are amazing places and
it feels like your deep in the countryside somewhere....

the places are there , the desire to explore is the key thing......I've gone hiking in the most amazing terrain just outside of Las Vegas, the canyons and the landscape are gorgeous.....

you just have to look.....

I agree Mae, I don't believe there is enough of anything that would cause me to leave my rural forty-acres, and bazillions of stellar-night-lights!

I watched a documentary a few days back, on "The Fear of Darkness", and why it has remained with us.
The story went back to a time before we had electricity. Many people feared the total darkness because it was so dangerous to be out in it.
The torches often did not give off enough light to keep one from falling into a ditch, walking off a ledge, or seeing an attacker.
In that time if you broke a leg or fell victim it was a death sentence.
The reason they had shutters was to protect their homes from robbers coming in.
I think it wise to always carry those small led lights just in case. my thoughts Judy

Get out of FEAR! What you think you will attract to yourself. This is what's wrong with the world in general. FEAR has become a mantra to most. Try being happy, loving and helpful, even in times of challenge.
Trust others and you will be trusted. Stop thinking everyone you don't know is a threat. We are all humans surviving our best on a planet that is alive as well. Next time you're walking in the dark, tell yourself you are safe, Know how powerful you are, and that others are here to help you. There is more love in the world than you realize.

I agree with your message having been a night owl most of my life, I trust the dark like I trust the day. Humans be humans, no matter what time of day. In the dark, my sixth, street sense kicks in to figure out what's 'out there.' Sometimes a 'scary' feeling in the dark is real. If I get spooked I'd rather be safe than sorry. City folk know that one block off in an area you don't know well can mean wandering into trouble, esp in the dark. Lots of little 'pockets' of trouble usually well known by people in certain sections of all cities.

If you tool around in the dark long enough you may get to know the streets well enough to feel safe but lights out in areas that are under duress from weather and floods, etc., can be more hazardous. My witching time is 4am, when I feel more creeps are out. Don't be walking around in the dark when you're tired, you're a walking target to any creeps- I know from experience! Looking down a long empty street with no lights you get creeped out, follow your instincts and go another way.

Good idea on the long life flashlight too. I'll be looking for one of those soon because I'm tired of those darned little batteries quitting on me so soon.

What you're saying is so true. We create our reality & have to be so
careful of what we think. There's also the fine line of reality, there
are people who do not value others & will do harm. It is finding the
balance of it all. I haven't seen you post before, welcome to the
forum.

maybe you should try a little compassion instead of trying to make someone feel guilty by your so-called admonition...!!!!

what about you going up to new york right now and try walking down those dark streets and see what kind of 'goodie' feelings you would have...

god takes care of those who take care of themselves and that includes being forewarned and a reality check, not stupid, insipid smiles ...

arghhhh!!

Very well said, kay so. or.!! Even the animals stop and sense the situation before stepping out of their "safety zone". The reality of the folks living in the Sandy devastated areas is one of possible danger...whether it is recognized or not! Just more New Age drivel......

I appreciate your very
descriptive posts of what you are
seeing (and lack thereof), hearing,
feeling back there. Gives a real
sense of what is going on.

Harbor Freight has a "crank" lantern,
no batteries needed,
with 3 different light levels,
100K hrs, under $15.

Thanks and continue to stay safe,

Yeah with the time change it gets dark early this time of year.

It usd to change in October and you could kinda get used to it.

Stay safe and don't be out there after dark unless you have to be.

A whistle may be better than nothing.

Guys,
Thanks for your answers. I'm doing my best cs I'm NOT letting fear get the best of me EVER! However, that was a bit of a surprise cs I'm so used to that part having light. I didn't even think of stopping to look for my flashlight in my bag in that darkness. I would NOT have stopped in that brief darkness for NOTHING baby! Just kept walking to go thru it as fast as possible!

While the advice not live in fear is good advice it doesn't mean you
shouldn't be cautious.

I lived in New York years ago and what some who have criticized
don't understand is it can be just as bad in a normal situation with all
the lights on.

Follow your instincts.

You are living through it while others have the luxury to pontificate
from their computers.

Hang in there. You can get through this.
