Guys,
(I just lost my typing of my posting, so if you see 2 here, read this one!)
THIS WAS EPIC!
#1 LESSON : EVACUATE!!! After this, I cannot emphasize enough that when the authorities, your Mayor, the media, your gut, tells you to EVACUATE, PLEASE EVACUATE!!! GET OUT BEFORE THE STORM!!! WAY BEFORE IT HITS!!! So many here are in so much trouble and A FEW DIED DUE TO STAYING OR WORST, TRYING TO GET OUT AFTER THEY STARTED SEEING HOW BAD THE STORM REALLY WAS !!! NEVER DO THAT!!! I cannot imagine what the people of New Orleans went thru in Katrina! We think we know! FREAK NO, WE DON'T KNOW and I think I would've died of some heart attack during Katrina if I had been there! MY GOD!!!
#2 Buy BOTTLED WATER GALLONS!!! AT LEAST 24-30 GALLONS!!! Have more water at home than Noah had outside his ark! #3 HAVE FULL GAS TANK + A FEW CONTAINERS OF GAS #4 HAVE AT LEAST $2,000-$3,000 IN CASH AT HOME, SAFE #5 HAVE ALL YOUR IMPORTANT PAPERS IN A SAFE (the kind that you can buy at Staples that is fire proof and water proof) ,,, Make copies of your SS, Passport, Drivers License, Home Insurance Policies, Car Insurance Papers, and any other VIP papers you can think of that pertain to you. Keep the copies in some safe deposit box in a bank or the originals, whichever you choose. The other set, put it in gallon sized Ziploc bags 2 or 3 flip sid ended each one to protect the papers. #6 JUICE UP YOUR CELL PHONE BEFOREHAND ... and use only one cell when abosolutely necessary until it runs out and then use the next one. #7 HAVE YOUR WORK'S BUSINESS CONTINUITY PAPERS IN YOUR HANDBAG or at least their TEL# and website. That saved me cs my work building is only getting electricity tomorrow. My Dept Head has been working out of a business continuity office by his house and 3 others in the dept can't even access remotely due to the building not having power and they can't access remotely. My building was at street level with 7ft of water, the basement and the Winter Garden and all those WTC area buildings, all screwed. Some of you will probably not mind that the Goldman Building had about 9 ft of water around it. The picture said it all! But their main entrance doors are somewhat elevated from the street so that saved them some but not much cs their garage was flooded beyond recognition I'd bet. I only saw the picture and I was amazed!! #8 DON'T COUNT ON ELECTRICITY, WATER OR HEAT FOR AT LEAST 4 DAYS especially if you live in an apartment building #9 PETS ... Have their cage, their food and newspapers for them to do their dodoo at home. Havve a bug out bag for them too! #10 NO COMMUNICATIONS Many could NOT USE THEIR CELL PHONES AGAIN (just like during the blackout a few years ago) but this time the cell towers went down and that was that.
#11 BEST PLACES TO JUICE UP CELL PHONES, LAPTOPS: AU PAIN QUOTIDIEN AND STARBUCKS! They're open in NYC and packed with people.
#12 ATMs You should see the lines I saw at Citi and Chase branches walking in midtown today. LINES people! Don't assume that your local branch will be open, functioning or that you will be able to transfer money from one account to the other. YOU MAY NOT HAVE ACCESS TO CASH FOR A WEEK! My agency had a glitch last week and I didn't get my paycheck. So make sure YOU SAVE AND HAVE CASH ON HAND PLEASE!!! THAT IS VIP!
#13 HAVE A FLASHLIGHT and A PAIR OF SCISSORS in your handbag or for the men, a Swiss Army knife ... both for whatever may be needed or to protect yourself from any attack.
#14 MANY STORES MAY NOT RE-OPEN FOR DAYS ... Ask yourself how are you going to manage food wise, water wise, information wise if everything's closed?

Thank you so much for suggestions from the front lines of a disaster--it's a keeper! This and Sheila's idea of camp one-burner with propane, camp LED light, and garbage pail for waste. All VERY good ideas. He he, maybe a couple of flares if things get worse and something glow-in-the-dark/fluorescent for diversion or getting noticed during the day for flyovers. When I see people out in the cold I keep thinking why isn't anyone dropping some Mylar sheets for them to wrap up in? I can't believe everyone is going to get hit with another storm when people don't have homes to go to. The security groups say for any of these 'dire' events, it will take a WEEK minimum for someone to get to you.
For nuclear plants trying to cool their sfp's, they'd better jury rig electricals or get generators/ batteries in ASAP. The 300 thousand gallons of diesel floating in inundated areas and the sewage floating around are major health hazards! I read an article saying that the rats underground that drowned need to be removed pronto, ditto any homeless that might've not have exited the sewers fast enough. Grim grim realities. It will take months to even think this disaster will be mitigated for most people to go back to work, to their homes or another shelter, and have food/water, let alone light and electricity. We'll se what happens with the flooding in the WTC area--doesn't sound good for the buildings. Also, water lubricates faults and well, quakes can happen over time. I have no idea which faults might be closer to rupture in NYC or NJ given weighty flooding that sticks around (besides the one under the train - good gawd).
{{{{You are in all our prayers!}}}} Take care and stay safe- :) Watch 'yer back too. I don't trust any city folk on the skids...especially kids and cons, although there are certainly exceptions to that blanket statement, lol. Keeping a low profile is good too if you have your cash, your water, and some food on ya, out in the open. In Katrina people avoided problems by staying out of view from the local rabble.

Poly,
Thanks for this! Sheila's ideas are added to my list!
There is SO MUCH going on that I don't think that some even are thinking of sending blankets to those people UNTIL now that they know there is a storm...But I have NO IDEA if there is already distribution of some sort of blankets etc. A friend of mine distributed clothes and shoes these past couple of days in Freeport cs so many people have lost almost everything there!
Unfortunately, Manhattan has 2 faults (for its size, not normal big) and a few smaller others that are like cracks. The bigger ones go right by the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. Of all places right!
Check out the link and you'll see all the faults. I don't think they're deep but this New York Magazine article from 2005 shows them. And there are some in NJ too. FREAKY!
Thank you for taking the time to post!
