Sandy survivors push toward normalcy and search for the missing

The storm was blamed for the deaths of 157 people -- at least 88 of them in the United States, two in Canada and 67 in the Caribbean.

While some mourned, others focused on the struggle facing the living -- as authorities in nine states worked to restore basic services such as public transit and electricity.

When it comes to electricity, Manhattan has become an island of haves and have-nots. About 530,000 customers were without power citywide, Bloomberg said, many of them south of Midtown's 34th Street. Parts of Queens and Staten Island also had no electricity Thursday. "Restoring power will take a lot of time," the mayor said.

New York's vast transit network remains hobbled. The Metropolitan Transit Authority said 14 of the city's 23 subway lines were running and a flotilla of 4,000 buses was attempting to take up the slack. For some, Thursday's commute into Manhattan from the outer boroughs took five hours.

from what i am reading 'civilization' is experiencing a melt down, just like the spooky movies we have seen when all the civilized veneers of people disappear when then can't get the necessities.

So different here then it was in Japan, with their teachings of 'respect' and patience no matter what..americans just want what they want when they want it...good time not to be in the cities!!!

Subject: People, PLEASE use this as a WARNING of what is to come!!! Prepare!

Perhaps this sounds callice, but... how many days of warning were offered that a MEGA-STORM was approaching? Many areas had a mandatory evacuation. Many people diregarded the warnings, and watching the films prior/during the hurricane, they didn't even board up the ocean front homes!

We, as a country of citizens, have become lax in many ways. We do not heed warnings, we think we will be okay...

While there were still subways and busses running, and roads open, there were many places open for people to hunker-down in. People made their choices...

Growing up in So Cal with major quakes always looming with NO warning...we were always told that in the "BIG" one, we would have to be self sufficient for at least 3 days, and it would be better to prepare for at least a week if the infrastructure was damaged.

Do I feel the pain and suffering of the people, yes... especially those who had homes destroyed or burned...those who were in hospitals... the emergency people. But, people... we have to be ready, to be ready to take care of ourselves. We have to help our fellow man, share our food, our homes. We have to be ready, also, to leave when required.

My heart cries out for the North East, there is such extensive damage and yes, people in need. But... when are we going to learn our lessons? When are we going to become self-reliant?

I guess this is a warning...are YOU ready? Do you have water? Food? Blankets? Someway of heating up food? Do you keep gas in your car (or are you like me, guilty of waiting until you are on empty to fill it up?) I guess it doesn't cost any more to keep it 1/2 filled, or even 3/4 filled?

No... you all know I am not heartless, although these words sound as such! But, we have to be ready for what the future brings us, especially when warned...

Blessings, Love and Light... may you enjoy your warm bed, your pillow, your house even more today than last week...as so many no longer have even that!

you are so right Linda.....we always heed warnings here. My husband made fun of me with this storm and preps but he saw what happened to everyone else after it started. We were in a spot with no snow etc. the wind was minimal...just lucky this time.

My brother lives at 2200 ft and got 16 inches of snow and it took down 7-8 of his trees blocking the drive way. But at the bottom of the hill(2 miles away) in the valley my dad didn't have snow, just a skiff. It was a strange storm.

IF only those folks in NJ or NY had heeded the warnings. When the pressure is that low everyone needs to get out if you live around the ocean, sound or bays that vary water amt's. And that is why people need to move away from the coasts..or else rebuild more smartly.
