Subject: Thousands in Northern California told to flee Ponderosa Fire

URL: http://wlfhotlist.com/threads/29875-CA-TGU-Ponderosa-(was-1-3)/page9

this one started yesterday (Saturday) and is threatening at least 3500 homes.

Thousands of residents in three rural communities in Northern California have been told to leave their homes as a wildfire that has already destroyed four homes and scorched nearly 19 square miles now threatens their property, a fire official said Sunday.

About 3,500 homes in a rural area along the border of Tehama and Shasta counties were being threatened by the Ponderosa Fire, said state fire spokesman Daniel Berlant. The fire was about 150 miles north of Sacramento and was near the towns of Manton, Shingletown and Viola, he said.

The Ponderosa Fire, one of 14 major wildfires burning in California, was among a rash of western wildfires scorching parts of that state, Washington, Idaho and Utah.

I'm following the posts on Wildland fire hotlis thread about this fire. So far it's on page 9 already. More to follow - this is a really BAD fire!

from what I understand, this fire is going "nuclear"..it has the firefighters running right now to save themselves and about to cause some destruction to areas ne of Redding of a catastrophic nature. Many homes are endangered and about to be lost at this moment if something miraculous doesn't happen.

This is an extremely sad and potentially devestating situation and my prayers go out to all in its path.

I've been trying to find scanners that actually work. No luck. I've got really bad feelings about this fire, had them from the getgo.
My prayers join yours Redhart, so many homes, farms, ranches involved.
I suspect that in the morning, the acres burned will be far greater than the 12K of last report.
If you hear anything more, please post.

Map updated with latest Division locations. Div W is new Sunday evening where fire jumped south fork Battle Crk and is the new resource priority Div for tonight into Monday along with Div A. Dozers crews and Type3. What it does on W and A tonight determines how sharp the bullseye is for Manton Four Corners and Ponderosa Sky Ranch Monday afternoon and beyond. Heard intel on fire holding below rim near digger creek rock creek rd area. They were blind to any accurate head location all afternoon in the smoke. Intel on Div T tonight was positive, where there was heavy structure threat with little resources. Northern head of fire veered to east in afternoon with wind shift, away from shingle town and 44, which also blew the south end over south fork battle creek.

Cal Fire AM update: 19,627 acres - 35% contained. 7 structures destroyed. Still threatened: 3,065 residences, 20 commercial properties and 300 outbuildings.

I did read that there's way more than 7 structures burned however. Nonetheless, good to see that they've got the VLATs, and a huge aerial attack on this fire.
About time and hope they use them in Idaho, & the Chips fire.

UPDATE #12 8/20/12 1000 HOURS
Plumas County Sheriffs’ Office
Press Release and Evacuation Order
“Chips Fire”Incident

Date: 8/20/12 Time: 1000 Hours
Incident: Wild Land Fire in the Feather River Canyon and Butt lake Areas

On 8/20/12 the Chips Fire proceeded up the Clear Creek Drainage and headed towards Ohio Valley. Due to extreme conditions, this caused the fire to spread to the top of the ridge South of Ohio Valley. There were also spot fires located on the South side of the North Fork of the Feather River below Seneca Road. To combat the further spread of fire a back burn process has begun. The back burn which began on the night of 8/19/12 West of Canyon Dam and Big Meadows was implemented to stop the further spread of the fire. Due to the fire danger and location of the back burn along Hwy. 89 near Prattville, a Mandatory Evacuation of Prattville is now in effect. There is a Mandatory Evacuation still in effect for Canyon Dam and Big Meadows area. A Voluntary Evacuation is in place for Almanor. An Advisory is in effect to all West Almanor and East Shore residents (Hwy. 147) advising of the potential threat of the fire to the areas. Evacuation Center is located at the Chester Memorial Hall on Gay Street. Stay tuned to media advisements and monitor the Plumas County website for updated information. For Evacuation Center information call (530) 283-3593.
Due to current weather conditions and fire behavior the following Road Closures, Evacuation Orders and Sheriff’s Advisement are in effect.

Highway Closures

-Almanor West

Definitions
Sheriff’s Advisement- Will be sent to all local radio and news stations, Public Information Officer Plumas County, Local OES Director, Fire Departments in the affected area, and the Chips Incident Command Team. Due to the Chips Fire and its behavior the above listed communities are under a Sheriff’s Advisement. Residents are encouraged to make an evacuation plan, to include the gathering of photos, important documents and priceless keepsakes. Please discuss with your family a location you will travel to, should the need arise to evacuate. Ensure you have also made arrangements for the care and safekeeping of your pets.
Sheriff’s Voluntary Evacuation- Due to the potential threat to life and property by a wild land fire, residents are encouraged to leave the area. The area will be staffed by Law Enforcement and residents will be advised of the threat, but no road closures for residents living in the area. The general public will not be allowed in the area “Soft Closure”.
Sheriff’s Mandatory Evacuation- Due to fire behavior and/or proximity to the wild land fire, residents are in imminent danger or the potential for imminent danger exists. Residents are encouraged to leave the area and road closures will be in effect for all roads around the evacuated area. These closures are “hard closures” residents and the general public will not be allowed back and/or escorted into the area until the evacuation is lifted “Hard Closures” to the local highways could also be established for the safety of fire personnel in the area. If “hard closures” are established it is a “Sheriff’s Mandatory Evacuation”, due to the fact that the general public will not be allowed free access and therefore can not adequately maintain food, supplies, medicine, etc.

seeing as how that wind direction isn't good for the lake so wonder how this is going to affect the communities there. My daughter, grandkids go there every summer - not this summer though.

I drove past Almanor on the east shore, and around the lake on Sunday. I only saw one fishing boat out on the lake. Not good for Almanor's busiest weeks of the year.

The next day, they closed Hwy 147 (east shore) and 89 (west shore)

I talked to a friend in Hamilton Branch, and he said the fire is killing the economy this year.

that's what I granddaughters said when they were there 1st week of August. Then the smoke was coming from either the Chips or Reading fires, now add insult to injury with the Pondersa fire. They could hardly breathe! Am surprised to hear about the road closures too, but looking at the Chips fire map yesterday, understandable enough.
Glad you checked in Jeff, was wondering if any of those fires and their smoke was affecting you up there in Quincy???

I believe it. Apparently according to news I saw this am (all of a sudden there's actual tv coverage of this fire), that fire went wild yesterday, flared up all over the place. Then they showed all the senior citizens from Manton at a public meeting. They looked so tired, worried, my heart bled for them all.
I didn't know that there were so many retired folks living in these areas.
Hope your son is safe conch!!

Hwy 44 closed several places and the news is really slow to come in. 1st I heard this am 5% containment but dunno if that's then or now?
Not much updating on the hotlist there either - too early I guess.
Any fire that can grow from 0 to 12 thousand acres in 24 hrs is already "nuclear"!
The guy doing that map hasn't updated in 9 hours either.
Everybody complaining about not being able to get decent, updated news of this fire. Facebook has a page up with some updates. Will try to post if I can refind it. Crazy stuff - having to go to facebook for updates!!
