The gift that keeps own giving.

Especially to future generations.

it is *genetics* don't you know?

what do you think has been happening to all life on this planet since the widespread use of chemical everything?

And the doctors tell their chronic patients - it's your genes.

Bullshit!

hi Phil, someone posted this on the enviro bd and luckily I found the original paper - the whole study, something that is very hard to find with new scientific papers these days. One usually has to pay $$ per paper or be a scientist or both!

The whole study is troubling and revealing in that 2nd and 3rd generations of those butterflies displayed far more damage than the 1st gen. parents and there's some comparison of radiation levels to Chernobyl as well.

Also, remembering that one of those nuclear power plants had MOC fuel, the last paragraph is especially telling:

"Our demonstration of heritable germ-line genetic damage caused by low-dose exposure due to radioactive contamination in a species of butterfly has invaluable implications for the possible future effects of radiation on animals. In view of the detection of plutonium released from the Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP44, the possible risk of internal exposure from ingestion should be investigated more accurately in the near future."

Ya think?!!

Hi Sheila.

The long term effect on future generations is what stood out.

And as you pointed out the cumulative effect was exponential as they
looked at following generations.

We have a nuclear power plant less than a hundred miles from Los
Angeles and it sits right on the coast just like in Japan.

There are already safety issues being debated with the reactor
without the seismic factor.

It's even closer to the beautiful city of San Diego.

18,000,000 people in Southern California.

Also many around the country think California is all about Hollywood
but the leading industry in the state is agriculture.

When you look at the drought in the Midwest and the South then
California becomes even more critical.

After looking at Japan I certainly don't want to take that chance.

The problem with radiation is it's insidious nature and the most
severe damage won't be seen until future generations show up with
grotesque mutations to say the least and that's only part of the
cellular and DNA damage.

well said Phil! I grew up in So. Cal so am very familiar with San Onofre NPP and it's history and it scares the heck out of me.
I can't remember which fire it was a few years back that came so close to that plant but we talked about it on these forums.
5 legged frogs, all sorts of abberations, mutations caused by a variety of factors, pesticides, herbicides, radiation, etc. Not a good thing what we humans are doing to our beautiful planet. :(

In ageement wiht you on this...the time to do something is not afterwards...but before an quake
could destroy the area. If current patterns hold, and
radiation cloud could very well travel up the east sde
of Oregon along the Cascade Mountains also...all the way into Canada...also an area of agriculture.
