Explosions, 2 large smoke plumes, one with a fire plume visible, is in progress at the Chevron refinery in Richmond. Level 3 sheltering is in place for the City of Richmond. Looks really bad with two well separated fires roaring away. Guaranteed more bad air along with a 2 week 90-100 degree weather on tap for the Bay Area. Rats! Right now the northerly wind is blowing this hydrocarbon crud down to Emeryville and Fremont. I wonder about sabatoge. Could compressor issues be the cause of both plumes of smoke/fire?
What was not noted on Ch 5 TV 'Breaking News,' is that this refinery had a recent problem:
"Chevron Corp.'s (CVX) Richmond, Calif., refinery on Aug. 1 reported a flaring event to California state environmental regulators after a compressor failure caused a release of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. Its impact on operations wasn't clear. Chevron said the refinery would continue to supply product to its customers and doesn't otherwise comment on day-to-day activities."

My grandfather worked at that very plant and retired from Standard Oil/Chevron in 1968. Refinery work has always been hazardous and sometimes deadly.

Does your grandfather have health issues from working there? A lot of technology sites come with hazards, some invisible to workers.

Oh I'm so sorry for him, that sounds terrible! I had a grandfather who died of bone cancer in the end, omg, the pain- :/ It's so strange to think pf cancer as ubiquitous now. We didn't used to think that most everyone would get some form of it like we do now.

Yeah, I worked security at a chevron plant (names change w/ the conglomeration concentration) and it often spewed gasses over the city (carpinteria, near santa barbara, cal). It was built on an indian (chumash) sacred ground/burial ground. It was fortunate, indeed, that bigger disasters haven't happened there yet. Of course the city establishment, for the most part, did not take the situation seriously. The oil company lied blatantly and they accepted it.

Is sulfuric acid a typical 'spew' from these kinds of plants?
We are all 'collateral damage' to the great God Technology it seems, thanks to a passive population (who imitate the alpha leaders or make nice) and political lobbying that loosens regulations and monitoring programs to stop toxic releases. We need these technologies (or do we?), so where are the incentive for scientists to clean them up or find new ones? Do the corporate AH's running these plants even listen to worker input? How do they get away with all the lies to the public? How utility profits are used is another huge problem. Profits are used for company investment rather than maintenance of the plants.
All this drama with chemicals and nuclear energy seems so unnecessary. There is so much inertia at these plants to advance the technology or do anything different. We are at a new technology peak that needs serious refining, pardon the pun, of core executive values and processing methods, including maintenance or replacement of old equipment. Easy to say, but how to get there? The issues are complex, for sure. We have so many executives scooping incredible salaries and companies not paying taxes..the rabbit hole is deep.
It's interesting to hear from people who've worked around these industries! Did the Chumash try to prevent the plant from being built there?

I didn't hear explicitly what any official tribe members did. It was put there before I got to town. All the time I was there, it was mainly me myself and I as I literally, for many years, spent my nights out on that cliff, and had that information through all the people who talked to me at the security guard job that I held from apr 81 to apr 83.
