Subject: Calif- Kern Co- "Sand" fire (eastern Tehachap)

URL: http://wlfhotlist.com/threads/28612-CA-KRN-SAND?p=118719#post118719

This fire has blown up to 500 acres and has shut down Hwy 58 in both directions on the east side of Tehachapi. It's currently burning at the junction of Sand Canyon and hwy 58 on the north side of the hiway (westbound).

At least 40 structures are threatened at last check, evacuations will be most certainly called for.

My vet lives over there on "Horse Apple Ranch". She has a lot of horses.

Prayers always welcomed.

You can keep up with this fire via wildlandfire.com at link above.

I may get a call to go in and work, even though its my day off. Many of our employees live on the other side of the closed hiway and may not be able to make it in this afternoon.

and, "I" am okay--I live far on the other side (west) of Tehachapi.

Perhaps Lind.e could check in, though. I think she lives just south of that area on the east side.

Unfortunately winds and fire are picking up :( I am due west of the fire. I am seeing horse trailers, cars and trucks being escorted by highway patrol, westbound on Tehachapi Blvd. Yes, prayers will be welcome!

Thanks :)
It looks like the imminent threat is over for now. The fire was over 50% contained this morning and they expected full containment by this afternoon. The weather is cooler and more humid today, and that should aid them further. What was left of the fire this morning is away from houses now.

Another bullet dodged (well, except for the poor SS Minnow!)

As I write that, weather service saying chance of T-storms tonight and tomorrow (sigh). Let's hope it doesn't manifest in dry lightning.

Good luck to you up there with your situation.

Thank you Linda!

Air traffic is fast and furious over me, trying to get a handle on the fire with water drops before the sun sets and the planes and helicopters are grounded.

I have seen the helicopters fly after sunset "if" there is immediate threat to homes/life, but they have to ground the aircraft for safety. They won't fly the helicopters after dark unless they feel it's a life threatening situation for people.

We will be in trouble only if the winds change direction. And then our main worry would be burning embers flying over us to cause new flare ups.

It is a comfort to know they will fly the helicopters if necessary. I hope it will not be. Prayers for all in the path and all fighting the fire!!!

Thanks Trish. If you don't mind, and others, please add prayers for our water. The neighborhood I live in is doing a pipe repair and instead of postponing because of the fire, they went ahead with it and a half hour repair is spanning into the evening. Our water has been off for overthree hours. If the winds were to change and embers fall here, we have no hoses, no hydrants. I feel like a sitting duck, which is quite nonsensical, as you would imagine a duck in water and we have none :( I'm just a tad over anxious at this moment. Taking a deep breath.

The fire has tapped down a bit but after the last two years of fires here, I know that can be false relief. I hope and pray for the best!

Highway 58 reopened, fire moving toward Sand Canyon
Highway 58 has been reopened Tuesday afternoon but a roughly 500-acre wildfire is still burning toward the community of Sand Canyon.

The fire started near the highway and is threatening 40 structures as it burns north, Kern County Fire Department spokesman Derek Tisinger said. County firefighters are on scene but are not yet evacuating people, Tisinger said at about 2:45 p.m. There have not be any confirmed reports of structures damaged by the fire.

A little news via wildlandfire.com:

"MODIS, GOES, and AVHRR are all picking up this fire from space. There's a couple of hot spots about 6 miles north of the main body of the fire. "

"Kern County Fire Department Twitter @kerncountyfire:
Sand Canyon Fire at 15% containment, 750 acres. No evacuations at this time. "

*My hubby was in town a little while ago, he said it looked like the fire was running "up" slope, toward the windmills (but away from homes).

Thank you, Roy

The fire is now at 1800 acres and the fear it will go to 8,000 acres over night. More equipment and manpower streaming in. The good news (depending on who you are, I guess) is that the fire is heading east and northeast...away from the homes directly north and northwest in Sand Canyon. While this is good news for home owners if the winds don't change, it's not good for some windmill farms as the flames are now heading directly for the windmills.

Sand Canyon Rd. is closed (except for evacuating residents, of course) and hwy 58 is open (I think)< althought that can change if the fire doubles back toward the highway. If you have drive through the 58 pass tonight, please check current status first.

Old dairy structures, 'SS Minnow' victims of fire

A part of Tehachapi history burned Tuesday afternoon, July 17, when a fast moving brush fire destroyed structures on what was once the Cameron Dairy Ranch.

Known to locals and many a traveler alike, a beloved landmark, an old boat — the “SS Minnow” – is visible from Highway 58 on the north side of the roadway between the Cameron Canyon Road and Sand Canyon Road exits. The aged structures nearby, including a home and large barn, went up quickly when the wind-driven fire blasted through the property.... (at link)

awwwwww, not the SS Minnow!!! Dangit!

The flights have stopped overhead. Now we wait till morning light. We still have no water :(

We lived in Santa Clarita years ago with a fire up the canyon from us. Firefighters told us fire generally works up a canyon and we would be okay. We woke to burning embers flying past our window, the air orange, in the middle of the night. Scariest night I've ever had! The fire had turned and burned back down the canyon right to us, creating its own winds, whipping those embers everywhere. I don't like fire :(

yeah, fires can almost behave like a creature...creating its own rules as it goes. You don't turn your back on it. We've all seen how fires sometimes seem to defy what they "should do".

Geez, hope your water comes on soon. Do they have a reason for it being off so long? Thought this was only supposed to be a repair.

Seriously, I'd chew some butt on this one with someone.

I have an app that gives me the temperature, humidity and wind velocity/direction. Picks up info from the Tehachapi airport down the road. I am watching it carefully for any turn in the wind. I can smell something musty and am hoping it is just my imagination. I should not smell smoke unless the winds switch.

I don't know what is taking them with the water (???) We have had water issues here periodically. At least this time they attempted to tell us so we could prepare. Sometimes it is just off. Sometimes we know there are problems as water rushes down the street! :o I wish it was rushing down the street!!!
