I know the station personally and it was equipment failure. This failure is noted in the message section of the radiation network site for those who wish to check it out. I had an email from the station operator this AM in personal mail indicating the failure and cause unknown. We are in the process of assisting in analysis of equipment and potential failure modes past what is given in the message section. |

Been reading the stuff on the net and all I can say is there is no investigative work done now days. I had an email this AM from the operator of that station and he does feed Black Cat and Radiation network at the same time. He had an equipment failure and we are bouncing ideas back and forth on the troubleshooting of the problem. It happened at night when he was sleeping so he was not aware of the problem until morning. He, like me, runs the equipment 24/7 so are not always awake monitoring. I'm sure some part will be found that burnt out or some other failure in the computer or radiation equipment caused the readings. I guess we will find out this weekend when he gets time to work on the equipment. So the bottom line is dig in and research and no, he has not had those people show up on his doorstep although we are getting a good laugh as to what the Internet community is speculating. Could happen to me as I an running similar equipment. We had a high reading in Colorado Springs the other week. The equipment operator came home from the hospital after a radiation treatment and was 'hot' and set off the alarms with a high count. Took the equipment off line until he cooled down. That one also had the fingers flapping and not much researching. |

Just finished an email conversation with the station. Here is the finding. GFI failed which switched on the UPS - battery back up. The UPS makes noise the computer program thought was counts from the Geiger so just started counting like usual. the reason the counts increased is as the battery was going down the UPS worked harder and made more noise up until the total failure of the UPS. Operator has replaced the GFI and is reworking the station to hopefully remove the noise maker. As a side note, I had this happen last year when I had a power failure. The UPS made the counts go into the thousands and my only saving grace was that the main Internet had gone down so I did not send out the counts to the network. As for the black copters and the like, the South Bend airport has military operations all the time and the operator has sent photos to me over the years of the different aircraft seen in his area so no mystery there. Not a cover up of any type and yes this station does report to both Black Cat and Radiation Network from the same computer so that is why the readings on both sites. Black Cat had lower readings because they show ur/hour and Radiation Network shows Counts Per Minute - CPM. It is interesting in how this has taken legs and no fact check was done at all except here. But as i noted to the operator, if we were not in the know we could have been caught up also before fact check. As Joe Friday said . .just the facts, just the facts .. . |

Before Bush took over it was easy to verify. Even when there are articles written about this,they never made public comment. I wrote to a few stating the NRC has not commented and nothing coming from ppl I know either so it looked like a glitch that night. If it really had been that high I would have known for sure as many would. I was a bit disconcerted when one article tempted to show this all coming from the same area of the eqs which also has not been transparent. It is like a lot of things. The Norwegian spiral...why did they just not come out right away and tell ppl what it was? Something wrong is going on. Thank you so much for taking the time to look into this. Dona |

Forgot to add that Minot, ND AFB is at least 1,000 miles away and there are many monitors between them and S. Bend that did not go off. As for the hazmat crews, have no clue there other than what is posted but am very sure they did not show up at this location as the operator is still with us and not in a FEMA camp. So for now, the excitement is over and I guess a good thing is that people are actually watching so when something does happen eyes will see it. |

I agree Dona, always ask the questions before jumping. This has gone viral and the operator is very embarrassed it happened. I told him that 'S' happens and when you are dealing with computers and all the other items connected failures do happen. He is working on attempting to fully understand what and how and why it happened so the knowledge can be shared with others. This is what us engineers do, we are problem solvers. |

Well, ya, except there are some coincidences in this 'non-event.' Although evidence is key to establishing veracity of the event, in absence of 'perfect' data, one needs to keep an open mind and not 'throw the baby out with the bath water.' At the link (above) is evidence of one coincidental radar capture. Another piece of evidence was caught on the EPA Radnet query site before they wiped the data! His recent video here talks about the IN/MI border event, what it could be, what he doesn't know about it, and interestingly enough how it possibly matches with Fuku radiation riding the jetstream 'edge' that happened to be smack on that area. He's suspicious about the rad level, despite some people using their geiger counter to say there was nothing and despite blackcat systems and radiationnetwork being one and the same data said to be erroneous. One thing he said is that, if (a big IF) this was a real event, it will show up locally and wherever the wind went. If it was a nearby plant going awry, most likely it will happen again as certain nuclear plants typically have repeat incidents over time. These are vetted sources, so like Potrblog suggests, the high rad measurement on the IN/MI border is 'suspicious,' that's about all you can say about it for now. Been seeing the viral crap and it is that, just hysteria over an equipment failure. That station feeds both Black Cat and Radiation Network from the same computer that had the failure. There are NO black copters around that station. It is amazing how the minds go on this. As we have been discussing in private emails, this is a good example of psychological mass hysteria. The dots DO NOT CONNECT to this station and the event. No matter how it is spun in the well over 1-million hits last I looked, it is the same stuff over and over again. No one can substantiate the facts of the other 'rumors'. That station can supply facts as to an equipment failure. Facts are facts to engineers and speculation is just that, speculation. As noted, this is a real good psychological study case in mass hysteria and how the net can be used to control the minds of the masses. |

OK, for the last time, the readings were FASLE. EQUIPMENT FAILURE at the monitoring station. You will have noticed the station was up on both Black Cat and Radiation Network Sunday testing and we were looking at the results. Black Cat will continue to show the last reading when a station goes off line for hours up to 24 hours, Radiation Network will drop on the next cycle through. The readings kept going up because the UPS was making more electrical noise as the battery was failing which the computer program saw and put out as increasing counts. The same thing happened to my station about a year ago when I had a power failure. So all the hype I and the others have been seeing on the net, including the hype that the station was seeing Davis Bessie in OH is just that, non researched hype. Now for the increasing radiation yes, the radiation counts have been going up if you look at the averages over the past year. Mine in CO have gone from 19CPM average in April 2011 to 25CPM average after the Japan accident as of today, Monday. You have to look at averages and not one-time readings as the readings jump all over the place. I have been as high as 60CPM when a GRB has been detected. I measure Gamma and Beta with an air sampler. The bottom line it was a EQIPMENT FAILURE and nothing more. I have known the operator of that station for decades and trust that operator. As for the phone not being answered, the cell phone was turned off. The operator discovered the dead computer in the morning before getting the voice mail message of a problem. That station sends to both Black Cat and Radiation Network with the same computer so that is why it was showing on both sites. Sure Radiation network dropped him off when the operation of RN could not get hold of the operator and Black Cat dropped after the UPS battery failed and their software of X-hours after the last report timed out. |
