A tornado hit in Scotts Valley yesterday. Too weird!
Scotts valley is up in the santa cruz mountains and I
used to work there, so very familiar with the area.
While an occasional tornado in the Santa Clara valley
to the east of the mountains...or over the ocean to the
west, is not that unusual, actually hitting IN the
mountains is very surprising.

My grandson was flying from Portland (work trip) back
home and had to connect in san franciso. But when the
storm went through, and the tornado warnings went up,
his flight got delayed. He was supposed to land at
noon, and didn't make it in until 10pm.

Daughter sent me this link. She lives very near Scotts
Valley...video of tornado and aftermath at link. This
thing landed on the main road and just threw cars
around for nearly half a mile as it followed the road.
Several people in cars were hurt when they were thrown
from the road.

Thankfully, no one was killed.

I remember back in the 1990s spotting a funnel cloud coming East across the
South San Jose valley from the Los Gatos Campbell area towards county comm hill.
I dialed 911 and got them. when I reported the possible tornado touch down from
the funnel, being about 3/4 of the way some 3000 feet in length down from the clouds.
I asked if they could put out a warning to fire stations to be ready for
possible rescues. she replied I'm sorry we do not have any protocall for that.
she asked me what to do. I believed that it was headed towards station 22 so she did
a transfer to that station. I passed my warning on to them and one fireman
had a camcorder, I was able to watch it on TV that night.
fortunately it never touched down.
after that I went to a NWS free storm spotter class and SC140 was official.
they may have a free class in your area.
I have lost count of the number of times I have been through Scotts Valley.
by the way there were two touch down tornadoes later that year I saw the funnel.

The bay area is no stranger to tornadoes. In 1951, my
father was pulled from the tornado wreckage at the
Westinghouse plant in Sunnyvale where he was working as
a machinist. He was hospitalized with broken ribs,
bruises and lacerations, but survived (I was born a few
years later).

Story of this particular tornado outbreak and photos at
link.

Sunnyvale is on the south end of the San Francisco
bay...The tornadoes went from Los Gatos through
Mountain View and Sunnyvale... all relatively flat
valley land.

But, what is unusual is I've never seen one hit "in"
the mountains like that...the flat valley or off the
coast over the water, yes...Scotts Valley in the Santa
Cruz mountains? (I used to work there and know it
well)..That's definitely one for the books.
