One of my assignments on the Coast
Guard Cutter when getting underway
was in the very aft of the ship down
below with an engineer. Our duty was
to hand crank the steering by hand
incase the ship lost steering up on
the Bridge. Luckily we never lost
steering, but we were always
prepared as we would go through
narrow passage ways such as coming
into or departing Valdez Alaska, or
the inland passage in South Eastern
Alaska, coming into Pearl Harbor,
and or Seattle. Not sure why this
ship didn't at least have the same
protocol, you would think they would
until the ship reached open water.
