"Crews in California are in a desperate fight to stop the Caldor Fire as it races toward heavily populated areas around Lake Tahoe. Flames are now just three miles from the resort city of South Lake Tahoe, which hasn't seen danger like this in decades. Tens of thousands of homes there are under threat."

excerpt: For the first time in days, the pace of the Caldor Fire’s growth slowed Thursday, giving firefighters a sense of cautious optimism even as they warned that the unpredictable blaze still threatens parts of California’s famed Tahoe Basin.
Winds over the next few days are expected to be mild, giving crews a chance to cut off the fire’s advance before it burns through another community. South Lake Tahoe so far has been spared — in part thanks to a lucky break in the weather, but it’s far too early for those on the front lines to feel a sense of relief

Maps show how close Caldor Fire is burning to Lake Tahoe Katie Dowd, SFGATE Aug. 30, 2021 Updated: Aug. 30, 2021 6:54 p.m.

New Cal Fire operations maps show how close the Caldor Fire is now raging to the Tahoe Basin.
A detailed map shows the red tendrils of the fire's edge reaching into Desolation Wilderness near Ralston Peak. The fire line is also just below Upper and Lower Echo lakes. You can see a full-size version of the map here, although it can be a bit tricky to read as the map is topographical rather than a street-by-street view. The map is usually updated about once per day, so real-time fire lines have now moved past these. As of Monday evening, the fire was officially down into the basin.

You can also use this interactive map from Fire Mappers to get a sense of where the fire is burning. This is not an evacuation map. For that, you should look to county agencies. (Note: The map can sometimes be slow to load. If you don't see the Tahoe area render right away, wait a bit longer.)
The fire is raging through Twin Bridges and Echo Summit. Reporters on the ground are seeing major structure damage in the communities.
With high winds in the forecast, evacuation orders now stretch all the way to the shores of South Lake Tahoe.
The Caldor Fire went from 168,387 acres on Sunday evening to 186,568 acres on Monday evening. The fire is now 15% contained; it was 19% contained to start the weekend.
"Humidity recovery remained poor overnight and allowed the fire to continue to actively burn," Cal Fire said in its Monday morning briefing. "...Current fire behavior is contributing to ember casts traveling up to half a mile."

good ol' lyft...always ready to help...
Lyft critiqued after rides out of South Lake Tahoe cost $1,500 amid Caldor Fire evacuations Photo of Joshua Bote Joshua Bote, SFGATE Aug. 31, 2021
As the Caldor Fire heads more rapidly into South Lake Tahoe, a large majority of residents have already fled out of the area into evacuation centers, spare bedrooms and other safe havens in Reno and across Northern California and Nevada.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco-based ride-hailing app Lyft was accused Tuesday morning of price gouging as the last of the evacuees flood out of Tahoe.
A Lyft from the popular Heavenly Valley Lodge to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport showed a fare price between $1,300 to $1,500 for an "XL" vehicle Tuesday morning — a minivan or SUV that has the capacity to sit at least five other passengers. Typically, that ride is estimated to cost up to $200 for an "XL" vehicle, according to Lyft's own estimate prices.
As of noon Tuesday, the price had stabilized to a more reasonable $230 for an XL. A screenshot of Lyft's surge pricing.

A spokesperson for Lyft explained the substantial markup to surge pricing.
“When ride requests outpace the number of drivers on the road, prime time pricing — elevated fares designed to get more drivers to high-demand areas — is automatically enabled," said the spokesperson. When we realized how the evacuation order was affecting Lyft prices, we immediately implemented a cap and ultimately suspended prime time pricing.”
Lyft turned off its surge pricing function in the area later Tuesday morning, he confirmed.
A ride out of Tahoe from competitor Uber still would cost about a couple hundred dollars, according to the app, but no rides are available. An Uber spokesperson told SFGATE that service is still available, but that no drivers are available likely because "drivers are choosing not to drive on the platform, perhaps due to safety reasons or they may be part of the expanded wildfire evacuation order themselves."
As photos of residents waiting at evacuation stops continue to spread on social media, it's clear that not all South Lake Tahoe residents have the means to escape with their own vehicles — forcing them to turn to third-party services for expedient evacuations.
Urgency to flee is rising Tuesday as firefighters battle blazes only a few miles south in the town of Meyers, and winds are expected to worsen.

Oh..and to add... People who live in wildfire areas need to be extra cautious of wildlife. While many escape, they can become disoriented, confused and more dangerous..and often end up somewhere they shouldn't be in their rush out of their normal areas (just like people).
That's probably true of flood and hurricane areas, too. They go through the same loss, greif, fear and panic..but without as much help.
