this monster fire has explosive growth and doesn't appear to want to stop anytime soon. The little, historic town of Greenville burned down to the ground yesterday evening.

August 5, 2021 at 8:01 a.m. | UPDATED: August 5, 2021 at 8:57 a.m.

The U.S. Forest Service reported the Dixie Fire has surpassed 300,000 acres, growing by more than 40,000 acres overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, and the red flag warning is still in effect as crews face another challenging day.

The fire, currently mapped at 322,502 acres with 35 percent containment, spotted over control lines in Round Valley and grew rapidly while being driven by gusty winds, before it swept through the community of Greenville, where widespread damage was reported Wednes . . .

There has not yet been an update on the number of structures destroyed in the fire, though fire officials said damage assessment is ongoing. An estimated 12,438 structures are still threatened.

In a video update Wednesday night, Plumas National Forest Operations Chief Jake Cagle confirmed the fire entered Greenville around 4 p.m., leaving crews in structure defense mode. But with many people deciding to stay rather than follow the evacuation order issued by the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, crews had to focus on protecting them.

“We can’t protect structures because we are trying to get people out of here,” he said.

The fire is now the sixth largest wildfire in California state history. It surpassed the deadly 2020 North Complex Fire (318,935) and is now the largest fire ever seen in Butte and Plumas counties.

The fire started July 13 in the Feather River Canyon, and PG&E has disclosed its equipment may have been responsible for starting the fire after a company employee found a tree lying on a powerline near the Cresta Powerhouse.

The red flag warning will remain in effect until 8 pm Thursday for dry, windy conditions, low humidity and the potential for extremely active fire behavior.

This story will be updated.

me too Kay, there are big fires south of here and east of Eugene, threatening the beautiful Oakridge town and Bellnap Hot Springs. It's sending a lot of smoke up our way today and supposed to be 103 degrees. We used to hike a lot and visit these really beautiful forests back in the day but those days but now, not much left to visit. :(
There's other fires around the globe, Siberia, Algeria, Spain, Greece and God knows where else.
Not liking this new climate one bit!

Updated Thursday, 8:00a.m. Morning Update from Incident Command – 322,502 and 35% contained

Dixie Fire West Zone – Extreme fire behavior through the night fueled by low relative humidity and strong winds allowed the fire to grow 50,000 acres overnight. Firefighters continue to actively engage the fire, construct direct and indirect fire line and provide structure defense.

Dixie Fire East Zone – The fire spotted over control lines in Round Valley and grew explosively with whole tree torching and a crown fire being driven by gusty winds. Despite valiant efforts of firefighters, aerial resources and law enforcement to protect life and defend property, fire spread into the community of Greenville. Damage assessment is ongoing.

The fire behavior moderated some after dark. Red Flag warning will remain in effect until 8 pm Thursday for dry, windy conditions and the potential for extremely active fire behavior. Today the focus is on containing active fire perimeter on the north side of the fire and holding existing firelines.

this man has vast experience with mapping fires for incident management teams. Several maps showing where the spot fires are, appears to be several on the E. of Almanor.

Well, things are really going to hell on the Dixie Fire.
The forecast frontal passage is starting to affect the fire, winds are shifting to out of the west. 8/5/2021 – 4:30 pm.
What this means, basically, is as the front passes, we are going to get radical wind shifts, and the potential for thunderstorms interacting with the towering smoke columns.

The fire has crossed over the Greenville Saddle and is ripping on the north side of Keddie Ridge. It looks like it is well established past the Stroing Ranch and headed up toward Coyote Peak, to the West of the 2008 Moonlight Fire area. The fire is in a position where the upcoming westerly winds are going to push it down into the North Arm of Indian Valley.

There is plenty of area for the fire to burn along Fredonyer Summit, and Hamilton Mtn. The 2020 Sheep Fire buys some protection for Susanville, but the Sheep Fire was able to spread within the 2007 Moonlight Burn, so the Moonlight Fire, while it might slow it down, is not going stop the current fire.

Here is a really amazing look (right now) at what happens when a frontal passage interacts with a massive forest fire.
Two images 4 hours apart – 3pm and 7pm, today.(upper image is the last one).

On the north side of the fire, it has burned well into Lassen Park, all the way to Snag Lake. This view looks SE, the direction forecast winds will push the fire next. You can already see fingers of the fire starting to push east.
Concerned about this side of fire impacting Peninsula or Westwood. My poor hometown Westwood has it coming from all sides. IR mapping from 2:45pm, 8/5/2021.

Don’t have much intel for Chester/Lake Almanor West at the moment, but it looks like LAW will get bumped hard from the west when the winds arrive, which looks like it is starting about now – 4:30pm.

I did indeed see that and my blood boiled! Thank God they caught the guy before he did more damage and hope he gets what he deserves! I read he had mental problems, no surprise there.
