Subject: The Trump administration pushes Bristol Bay closer to disaster

URL: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2020-08-12/bristol-bay-alaska-army-corps-of-engineers-salmon-northern-dynasty

Bristol Bay, Alaska, where not
16 million but as many as 60
million salmon still return from
ocean depths to wilderness
rivers. The fish nourish orcas,
bears, the livelihoods and
culture of Alaska’s native
people and a commercial fishing
industry that delivers 46% of
the sockeye salmon marketed
worldwide. The fishery generates
$1.5 billion in annual income
and 14,500 jobs, a gift of the
wild waters and mountains of
Southwest Alaska that could last
forever if we would only let the
place be.

But Bristol Bay’s salmon are
threatened by a Canadian
corporation that proposes to
excavate a massive open-pit mine
to exploit and export American
minerals, primarily copper and
gold. Northern Dynasty Minerals
Ltd.'s Pebble Mine advanced in
the permitting process on July
24, when the Army Corps of
Engineers released a final
environmental impact statement
on the project. Contrary to most
assessments of Pebble Mine, the
Trump administration’s Army
Corps concluded that the project
would “not be expected to have a
measurable effect” on the salmon
or the fishing industry. Final
approval from Washington awaits;
if it happens, it would reverse
previous federal decisions based
on years of analysis.

Dynasty’s mine — an excavation
the size of 460 football fields
— would affect hundreds of miles
of streams, and its pipeline —
188 miles long with 82 miles of
road — would lie squarely
between two of our most
extraordinary national parks and
preserves, Lake Clark and
Katmai.

Been eaten for thousands of since at least since Mesolithic times by
hunter gatherers on coastal / estuary regions - i.e. Baltic , NW & weest
coast US North America, and South America regions etc.

Likely seal-lions were likely a competitor for Salmon even then.

The equipment used by Tlingit had a high degree of sophistication in
order to catch large numbers of fish. Some of it was specialised in that
particular hooks and rakes were designed for use with one sort of fish.
Canoes were used in the estuaries and between the islands of what is
known as the ‘Alaskan panhandle’ for halibut while large basket-like traps
were placed across streams for salmon which were guided in by fence
weirs (Olson & Hubbard 1984, 919, 929, 930). In addition they used dip
and scoop nets, seines, gill and small hand nets. Other groups such as
the Kwakiutl constructed salmon traps as well using poles with a range of
designs to fit varying sizes of streams. Stone weirs were constructed on
the coast and in small streams, spears and gaffs were employed.
In addition to the piscines, the Tlingit also collected uni- and bi-valves,
crustaceans, seaweed and other small sea creatures as well as hunting
seals and sea lions (Olson & Hubbard 1984, 930).

Subsistence within the area displays an emphasis on fishing with hunting
being a secondary source of food procurement (Croes 1992, 102). Elk
and deer faunal remains have been recovered as well as those from sea
lion and fur seal but even with the addition of shellfish and waterfowl, fish
still provided approximately 80% of the food resources (Croes 1988,
143,145). The site shows evidence of food processing with drying racks
and tools as well as storage baskets used when transporting the fish
(Croes 1988, 145-146). Analysis of red blood cell residue from a number
of the hafted- microlith blades made from vein quartz and green jasper
has identified fish blood on some of them (Croes 1988, 146; 1999, 63).
The fish were both marine and freshwater varieties with the late
summer/autumn catches being almost completely salmon making their
way upstream to spawn. Halibut seems to have dominated in the earlier
parts of the year (Croes 1988, 143).

Killer Whales eat sea lions.
And many Inuit eat sea lions too.
Have you ever watched " Life Below Zero"?
Well, there is a family there that hunts sea lions. Forgot their name -
sorry. That particular family spends most of their lives killing animals.
I find it disgusting how much they kill.
Yet that is their way of life, and not my bees wax anyway, on how
they live. I realize that.
But still, sheesh !

That is wonderful how you have faith in God to take care of the Sea Lions.
But Charles, God does not even protect all the young children, mostly girls, used in sex trafficking in Asia, where they are given to disgusting sweaty sex hungry men, to do with as they please. And this sex trafficking has been going on for a long time.
God does not do one iota of a thing about any of that.
Or the starving children in Yemen, or the bombing of innocent families and children in Syria. There are so many examples of innocents suffering horribly on this planet.
Excuse me for my tone, but what makes you thing God gives a rats ass about the Sea Lions?
This world is run by Evil,
Divinity resides within each of us. And so many have lost that connection and this world has become corrupt and brutal and cruel and toxic.
I know you are a passionate believer, and I so admire and respect your faith. But look around. Where is God?
Please dont be mad at me for sharing this view that I just shared.
Thank you.

that's what the messages are saying and i believe
them. and the universe is going to show us who God
is. the warning will show all of us our lives. and
the warning will be physical as well as spiritual.
and it is so close now. warning was told to us at
garabandal spain in 1965 if i am not mistaken. chas

The problem comes not in believing those messages,
but in believing them to the point that we refuse to
do our part because "God will take care of it."

Have faith in God, but not at the expense of
personal responsibility and involvement.

An irony: Perhaps God is trying to work through us,
but we don't realize we're the conduit, and we sit,
believing God will follow through. Without
realizing that we were chosen to hear and make it
happen.

It's Hubris to assume God will perform a miracle and
thus refuse to use the abilities He gave us to
fulfill His Light within us.

Don't deny God's gifts in you in the hubris of
wanting to see Him perform a miracle. That is also
a rejection of His gifts to you.

Oh, I like that.
I hope it really happens Chas.
So many for so long have been saying Divine Intervention, but it
never happens.
I just connect with Divinity within, because have noticed no Divinity
outside of self. Too much Evil. If God Presence is even here,
overshadowed by Evil. And I am not talking some kind of Devil, I am
talking evil in the hearts and minds of humanity.
Our world so needs it, desparetly.
I hope you are are right, with all my heart. It would change
everything.
