Subject: Camp Fire: Where's FEMA?

URL: https://twitter.com/EricHolthaus/status/1063271228180504576

I just read a twitter thread from victims of the Camp fire. 20,000+++ people, many of them elderly are sleeping in tents in a Walmart parking lot but Walmart will kick them all out as of this next Sunday.

This is quickly becoming another Katrina since most of these folks have nowhere to go, no money, no home, clothes and few still have their cars that they're sleeping in.

Why can't somebody, FEMA divert Hurricane Harvey tents, mobile homes to the Camp fire victims? Yes, FEMA will provide rental assistance if anyone can find a rental but the nearest town, Chico has few rentals available, certainly not enough to house this many evacuees!

You can read the twitter feed at the link, see the utter frustration of these folks and wonder why, after 10 days since this fire started, there's no FEMA presence at all in Butte County, Camp fire area.

PS: What shelters remain are full and have a Norovirus outbreak to add insult to injury. Theses folks need those Nat'l Guard tents parked at the border right now!

I've been following this closely and 2 places have opened up in Camp Fire area and cross posted. Yes I read about Walmart asking them all to leave by Sunday. Two places, one an athletic club and an old Sears building. Lots of help for all of these people, thankfully and the pets. FEMA is asking for volunteers right now to help sign the people up for FEMA. They are using the old Sears building for that.

"A Disaster Recovery Center is now open at the former Sears store at the Chico Mall for survivors of the Camp Fire in Butte County. The Center will be open daily from 9am-7pm, closed on Thanksgiving Day."

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! FEMA is opening their Disaster Relief Center tomorrow at the old Sears building at the Chico Mall. Volunteers are needed to take applications for disaster relief funds starting Friday, Nov 16 - Saturday Nov 24. Shifts are 9-12, 12-4, 4-7. Tomorrow and through the weekend are the priority at this time. Interested? Email vrodriguez@norcalunitedway.org with your name, shift, and contact information."

thanks for the info Pamela, most of the shelters are closed, one remains open. I wonder why FEMA needs volunteers, don't they have their own trained folks ready for any emergency? What I'm reading from survivors is that FEMA is nowhere to be found!

My computer is so slow tonight, can't post some of the links I want to but per your post above, there's a link to resources and it appears to me that resources just aren't there yet for the massive needs so hoping this is corrected before those people (1000+) camped in the Walmart parking lot are booted out.
Unfortunately many of them have pets, some shelters won't allow them so there's that.

I've been following this with great concern and
wondering the same things. Some of these people don't
even have shoes!! Is it ok for me to tweet this
information about the former Sears shelter?

Been hearing some good news of people being re-united with either their friends/family or pets. But please share the info for both places.
